10 Tools/Supplies for Fancy Sugar Cookies and A GIVEAWAY!

I’ve avoided talking about my obsession with decoration fancy sugar cookies here on Prudent Baby because, well, I just don’t find them very prudent. They are tedious. They are time-consuming. They are temperamental. But with that said, they are totally addictive to make and there is nothing quite like the delight on a toddler’s face when you hand them an edible work-of-art. People, I’m here to confess, I dream about decorating sugar cookies.

The other day I ordered this book that had been floating around in the old Amazon wishlist for a while. I was ordering my book club book and was under the $25 to qualify for free shipping, you know how it goes.

This book is amazing! Full of information that I had always wondered about… the perfect way to pack sugar cookies for shipping, the fact that you can not only freeze cookie dough in balls, but un-baked cut cookies and also baked cookies, with no damage. This book is full of helpful tips of wonder and amazement!

So since Christmas is upon us and if you are ever going to try royal icing, now is the time, I’m going to share the top 10 things I think you need to jump in. This “kit” would make a fun gift for someone interested in getting started.

I doubt my cookies would ever look as pretty as the cover of that book!
My favorite holiday cookie is a gingerbread (wo)man. I think I love these because they are easy for my daughter to decorate. they look cute no matter what she piles on.

The williams sonoma pumpkin cookies are pretty great but I think my favorite winter cookie is shortbread dipped in dark chocolate.

Sugar cookies, decorated beautifully with frosting and sprinkles. Throw in some hot chocolate and I'm the happiest girl around!

My mom is such an amazing baker that it's hard to pick a favorite, but I would have to go with poppyseed thumbprints with raspberry jam. (Probably because I can actually make those.)

I like sugar cookies for the holidays. It's been a long tradition for my mom, sister and I to cut out shapes and decorate together.

I don't even know what they are called, but those little balls that are buttery and filled with chopped pecans and doused in powdered sugar. I think they are called Wedding Cakes or something like that at the grocery store. Those are the best!

My favorite cookie is an old family recipe for a swedish cookie – the rosette. I see these in every culture, I think it's a universal cookie! đŸ™‚

Great blog! I'm a first-timer, here via papery and cakery, then Amy Atlas Events. I'm a pastry chef, which means that I make decorated cookies all the time. Great list, but I would suggest making shortbread cookies instead of sugar cookies for the decorated cookie base. I love sugar cookies, but they can get stale if the decorating project requires a lot of time. Shortbread cookies hold up remarkably well as decorated cookies.

My favorite holiday cookie are Linzer Heart cookies. I begged a pastry chef in Vermont to share her recipe, and she was amazing enough to bless me with the recipe. It's a shortbread base with an almond meringue piped edge, filled with seedless raspberry preserves. Mmmmmmmm…

Good luck! Can't wait to read more!

I love a buttery, Christmas-shaped Spritz cookie. They remind me of my childhood and now I make them with my own kids! My husband loves peanut butter cookies with a Hershey's kiss pressed into the center. I find nothing wrong with that either. We're planning to work on our gingerbread village this weekend. It must be almost Christmastime with all this cookie talk! That book looks like a winner!

My mom makes some killer white chocolate dipped red velvet cake balls, but i guess that doesn't really count as a cookie. I think Ill have to go with oatmeal raisin! Mom always used to insist that Santa liked them best when i was a kid, it took me years to discover the coincidence that my Dad and Santa had the same favorite cookie.

Super cool blog. Glad I stumbled upon it.

Favorite cookie? Well, it's technically not a cookie but I serve it with other cookies and I only make it at Christmas-Venetians. They are a three layered cake. The first layer is a yellow cake (represents white) topped with apricot preserves, the second is a green colored cake, also topped with the preserves, and the top is a red colored cake. The whole thing is covered with chocolate on the top, flipped over, then done on the other side. Then they are cut into little rectangles, 2 bite size. Oh so yummy!

Our favorite Christmas/anytime cookie is a ginger cookie that my husband's Mam-ah baked for them when they were kids. And I, too, love to decorate cookies with royal icing and luster dust, sprinkles, and other fun extras. They are tedious, but so worth it. Thanks for the give away.

I often eat so much sugar cookie dough that I don't have much left for cookies, but this might inspire me enough to save it for baking.

I have always wanted to learn how to make good cut out cookies, they are a lot of work if you do them right or poorly, so you might as well learn the right way! I would love to have this book, so maybe I could take that final step and give it a go! Thanks for this giveaway opportunity!

O dear, a Sunday on the couch clicking away Verwonderland -> Maya*Made -> Wisecraft -> Prudent Baby's giftlabels -> give-away. And of course I'll give it a try.

I love 'kruidnoten' this time of year. Sinterklaas (the Dutch 'father' of Santa Claus) throws 'kruidnoten' in our Dutch houses for richness (coins) and to keep us warm (they're a bit spicy). Try it yourselves, they are ready in 30 minutes (making dough en baking), and kids love them.

I also LOVE painstakingly decorated sugar cookies. I plan out my designs on paper before hand and color them with colored pencils to see how much to tint the icing. These are my fav to make, but my fav to eat are Cherry Chocolate Chunk with Oatmeal and Toffee (you know, everything but the kitchen sink!)

Those Rainbow Cookies – also called Venetians, I think – are a favorite in my house. Lots of steps, but worth the effort.

My favorite has always been Swedish Cookie Balls–a very short plain dough with nuts & rolled in powdered sugar. (I think some call them Mexican Wedding Cakes or Russian Tea Cakes.)

My families favorite cookie are "Yum Yums". Named by my children when they were small. My Mom would have tubs of them when we came to visit. They are still a family tradition and so addicting- really! My kids would get up in the night and sneak them. Originally called Scotcheroos- Rice Krispie like bars with peanut butter, topped with melted Butterscotch and Chololate Chips. YUM…

My favorite are a little ball cookie mde with walnuts or pecans and covered in icing sugar called 'polverones'. I love them because my grandmother used to make them for me when I was little girl. She would let me 'help' her roll them in the icing sugar and pretend not to see me when I would sneak a couple when they were still warm.

My favorite holiday cookies are iced Christmas cookies similar to the ones pictured on the front of the book! My mom and I make them together every year and take the ready-to-be-iced cookies to our family party so everyone can have fun with sugary icing and colorful sprinkles!
