Giveaway: Hello, Cupcake!

This giveaway is now closed. Thank you for entering!!
Hello, Cupcake! has been around for a few years but it is SO GOOD that we just had to do a giveaway. In fact, it’s SO GOOD that there is going to be a follow-up to Hello, Cupcake! called What’s New, Cupcake? which is due out on April 1st, and is available for pre-order.

Although I am addicted to collecting cake decorating supplies, what I love about this book is exactly what they say about it on their website…

“We don’t believe in hard-to-follow techniques or hard-to-find ingredients for cupcake decorating. That’s why our cupcake designs use candy and snacks available at your favorite convenience store or even the gas station. So go bake a batch of cupcakes, grab a handful of your favorite candies, and let’s get this cupcake party started.”

And all that money saved on decorating supplies might leave a little cash lying around for a few of these beauties. But I digress.

Please leave a comment letting us know your fondest cake (or cupcake) memory to enter. Ok, and get this, since we already have the book, we are going to splurge on shipping and open this bad boy up WORLDWIDE! YEAH, PRUDENT BABY INTERNATIONAL! WOOT!

A winner will be selected at random on Saturday, January 30th.

w00t w00t! My fondest cake memory was watching my older siblings make frosting for a cake and try to decide what color to make it-it kept changing, until we wound up with some very unappealing gray goop.None of us really wanted to it,it looked so bad.:)Love the blog, keep it up!!

My fondest cupcake memory is of a red velvet cupcake with white buttercream frosting that I bought for myself once after a long, long day. It was the perfect treat!

I think my favorite memory so far (: is when my little girl (now almost 10) turned one. She loved rubber ducks & i made her a big yellow duck cake. She ate i with both hands loved it so much she shared it with our two dogs! Both dogs died a few years later but i still love those pictures of them with McKenzie, all three covered in cake!

My best cake memory is when I made a Hello Kitty cake and (in the spirit of Hello Cupcake) it was super simple (white fondant cut into her face shape, jelly bellys for the flower, eyes, and nose, and black gel icing for the whiskers) and turned out cute!

Growing up my mom always decorated the best cakes. She's an artist and would paint with icing, blending colours with the tastiest butter cream icing. She would make whatever we wanted each year and my brothers birthday was only a week after mine so that must of been a busy time. I hope I can keep up the great tradition of beautiful home made cakes for my girls.
I would love this book to be inspired.

this entry is for Crystal who is having a problem posting comments…

We're a military family and Daddy is away alot so we decided to surprise him and have an impromptu cupcake party. I baked two dozen regular white cupcakes and agreed to let the kids help ice & decorate them. We were washing up in the bathroom from the icing and my two year old slipped away unnoticed.  When I went back into the kitchen, we found cupcakes with Legos stuck in them (which was a neat idea LOL), a Hot Wheels car, and a size 6 spider man shoe which was super muddy.. Ry still has a passion for baking but we make sure he never slips off again LOL..

I just had a cupcake birthday party for my daughter's first birthday. She had everything cupcake themed, and LOVED it! Now she even says "cupcake" at 16 months old, she's amazing, and apparently inherited my love of cupcakes.

My fondest cake memory was more of a memory of the cake that could have been. We were so busy at our wedding reception greeting and chatting that we never had any of our wedding cake! We did manage to eat some of our dinner, but by the time we left for our hotel there was no more cake to pack up and send with us!! Hard to believe since we had 15 different cakes with 6 different flavors, but there you have it. Everyone always tells us how much they loved our food, so we continued to be teased by the cake that for us, never was 🙂

The story behind my fondest cake memory doesn't start off pleasantly, but it ends very well. Back when I was in high school, I had spent an afternoon hanging out at my friend Molly's house. We'd spent most of our time together baking a chocolate cake for her sister's birthday, and then topped it off with some chocolate frosting. Mmmm Mmmm! All I could think about the entire time was sinking my teeth into that delectible cake, which Molly insisted would happen as soon her sister got home. Well, it turned out that I ended up having to leave before her sister arrived, and I was pretty disappointed that I missed out on some chocolatey goodness. When I got home, I told my mom the story. She felt so bad about it that she surprised me one random afternoon with a chocolate-chocolate cake of my own. It was amazing!

My fondest cupcake memory was when my friend took me to this cake cafe to make me try this irresistable Italian Rum Cake. We sat down and ordered a slice of the rum cake and one red velvet cupcake. We were both in shock because the red velvet cupcake took our breath away! The creamy and smooth cream cheese frosting on the very moist red velvet cupcake brought tears to my eyes. Ever since that day, I wasn't able to find another red velvet cupcake that tasted anything like it. :]

my grandma & her sister (my aunt opal) shared a birthday- 5 years apart. When they were young their mother always made my aunt an angels food cake & my grandma, a devils food cake. its still a big family joke. i guess my grandma was ornery.

My fondest cake memory is taking a cake decorating class with my mom. I was a sullen fourteen year old, and she was working full-time. As we worked in class with lumpy cakes and arthritic hands from too-stiff frosting, we bonded over our equal ineptitude for creating that perfect frosting rose. The cake decorating supplies are stowed in the garage, but the memories remain sweet and fresh.

My favorite cake memory is when I was about 8 years old. My mom and I took a Wilton cake decorating class. Our first cake ended up being a noticeably uneven, terribly decorated cake that said Merry Anniversary. It was awful, but I will remember the experience with my mom forever!

Oooohh! What a GREAT giveaway! Actually. my best memory is still very fresh. I made my first "real" cake for my mom's suprise birthday party just this month. My dad was pulling a major budget, so he asked me. And it ACTUALLY turned out. I got so many compliments on it, it was nuts! I want to try more now!

My favorite cupcake memory hasn't actually happened yet lol. My son's birthday party is tomorrow and we have our theme which is BBQ. Since he's only two and most guest are adult we made it a little more adult interesting lol. Anyway, we ordered a cake that looks like a hamburger, but had the issue that it wasn't going to feed everybody. So, I had come across cupcakes that look like hamburgers. I did a test run the other night and everyone who saw them got a kick out of them… so right now as I type, my cupcakes are in the oven so I can make these for tomorrow.

ooo. so cute!!! My baby girl would love these..

I cant remember how old I was when I had this cake but it was the best! My grandmother used to make cakes for a living, just for a small client base and friends, so she had lots of baking stuff. My mom, who doesn't bake at all, made me this AMAZING Barbie cake from a special pan. It had a plastic piece that laid on top of part of the cake for Barbie's face and such and the skirt of her dress was all cake and frosting!! I LOVED IT!! I thought it was the coolest thing.

It's funny that the comment above mine is about a Barbie cake – because that is my fondest memory, too. Except I never was lucky enough to get one as a kid. My BFF made me one for my last birthday – she was beautiful. She got a redhaired Barbie and decorated the skirt with those multi colored candy dots. Best cake ever.

My sweetest memorie was when I was a kid. I had a celebration and I got a wonderful cake full of roses, silver and white pearls and little doll on the top. I didn´t want to cut the cutest cake and share it with my guests so my parents had a hard time to talk with me- in the end we cut the cake but I will never forget how upsad I was in this moment…good my parents took some pictures of it before.

What a wonderful book!

This is more of a gingerbready moment — but one Christmas, years and years ago, my grandmother made about 30 gingerbread houses and they were all over her apartment. There were mangers, and modern buildings, and chateaus and castles — it was incredible! Every guest got to bring one home!

My fondest cupcake memory happened two years ago when I was pregnant with baby #2. I had planned a trip to visit my brother in NYC and on the top of my list of things to do was get some gourmet cupcakes! I ended up not being able to go due to pregnancy complications, so my mom scoured the internet for the best cupcake recipe and whipped me up a batch of the yummiest cupcakes!

My fondest cake memory, is from my 5th birthday. My best friend (a boy) told everyone that the yellow square with my name on it was really a bar of soap! At the time I was mortified, but looking back on it, it's quite funny and a great story to tell when ragging him about how horrible he could be as a child! Not your typical "fondest memory", but it is mine, nonethe less. 🙂

My fondest cake memory came not from one of my or my kids birthdays, but from my little toy poodle's 10 birthday this past September. She's a little cream and white poodle so I made a cake that resembled her face : ) Two cake layers, one carved into the face shape, and the other one to make the ears, frosted with white frosting, piped some icing to make her little mouth, and sprinkled coconut all over it. Added malted milk balls for the eyes and nose and then added little pink bows at the ears – I was very proud of that cake as I had a lot of fun making it, and it showed me just how creative I can be in the kitchen when I really want to be, LOL : )

My best cupcake memory has to be that I made over 100 cupcakes for my own wedding! And I did never regret it!!! 🙂 I made different ones to accomodate different tastes. But the ones I myself loved most were Cinnamon-cented devil's food cupcakes with white frosting. Hmm … well, NOW I'm hungry …

I alway laugh when I remember my first child's 2nd birthday. It was my first attempt at making his cake on my own. My dear mother stayed up with me until 2am the night before trying to decorate the little train cars for the train party. Whew. I have never lived that down! Haha! But it's a great memory that we still laugh about. 🙂

This would be wonderful to win! Thanks for the chance. My favorite (hard choice) cake memory is probably making my son's first birthday cake. My sis-in-law helped me do it "fancy-like" with the piping and the excess frosting. It was a happy, sunglass wearing sunshine… and it was devoured only hours after its completion. 🙂 It's painful to watch your masterpiece be destroyed… but c'est la vie with cake, no? 🙂 Thanks again.

I have always loved cake. When I was about 4 years old, my Uncle served Black Forest Cake at his birthday party. I kept saying 'I want the cherry' over and over (and had a bit of a fit). It all got caught on video and gets brought up now, 30 years later every single time anyone in my family sees a cherry!

My birthday is 11 days before Christmas and the day before my mother's but my dad ALWAYS insisted on two cakes. One for me and one for mom! I always thought that was cool!

As an adult, my favorite cake memory is a two way tie between making my daughter's Blues Clues cake when she was three and my youngest son's Spongebob cake when he was two. Both were from cake mixes but the decorations were all scratch. No special pans or anything like that. It was so much fun & the looks on their faces made all the time and effort worth it!

My favorite cake memory is probably when I was about 3 years old. My brother was turning 5, and my brave mom decided that she would let us, along with our two best friends who lived down the street, make and decorate his birthday cake. Our kitchen was literally covered in flour, sugar, and cake icing. We, of course, were covered in it as well. But we thought it was the best cake in the world. And we still look back at those pictures and laugh at our creative mess.

For my second birthday my mom made me the most amazing Cookie Monster cake. She used a mold, but each star-tip blue fur frond was all handmade, baby.

Bonus: A family friend made me a cookie monster cookie jar, which still sits proudly in my kitchen.

Double Bonus: All that blue food coloring caused some serious intestinal weirdness for all parties involved. Ahh, lasting memories!

While my grandmother was still alive and living near me, she always made me a lemon cake with lemon frosting for my birthday. My mom took over the tradition when she moved away. My sophomore year in college was the first year my mom wouldn't be able to deliver me my lemon lemon cake so she called my roommate who surprised me with one. It was the best surprise!

When I was in high school, my mom found a recipe for Kentucky Butter cake in the Betty Crocker cookbook. Everyone loved it so much that each member of the family had it for their birthday cake that year. I was the only one who continued to request it. When I went away to college out of state (my first birthday without my family) my parents surprised me by overnighting the cake to my dorm. Needless to say, it was a great surprise and I was very popular with my dormmates!

My favorite cake memory is my 14 (?) birthday. My mother threw me a surprise party, but I surprised them by getting a stomach bug during the party. I was miserable! I was so upset to miss my party, but my mom saved a piece of my favorite cake in the world (something chocolate chocolate chip ice cream with chocolate frosting – yeah) in the fridge for when I wasn't sick. It tasted great!

My favorite memory or no favorite memory was my son's birthday last year. I had 45 guests who were coming, so I had all these good intentions of making cupcakes for his birthday. Since we did not have a theme, this should have been easy right. Right – I bought hte supplies and they are still there in my pantry. I never did make them. I am more resolved to do it this time for my daugters BIG ONE birthday in 33 days!

I have two favourite cake memories! One is the carousel cake my mother had made for one of my birthdays when I was very young. Sure, it wasn't professional, but it was the thought that counted! The other is a memory of watching my birthday cake crack and slide apart, later to be held together by long bamboo skewers at a more recent birthday. Blackforest cake definitely needs a good cake to stay together! It was funny scrambling to keep it from ending up on the counter.

My fondest cake memory was when I attempted to make red velvet cake for the second time. My cousin was over and was watching me mix it all together. I was really under pressure though because before I started he had said 'Hmm.. maybe you could make our wedding red velvet cupcakes instead of us getting them elsewhere!'. Oh dear.. it didn't turn out so well. Probably because I overbaked it. In the end, they got their cupcakes elsewhere.. hehe. 🙂 I'll keep trying though..

I am 31 now but when I was younger my mother who is not very crafty at all really produce a bit of magic when she planned our parties. My fondest cake, I remember this well, was a Strawberry Shortcake one. She made it with a vintage metal pan with Strawberry's mold and artistically decorated it with tubes of multicolored icing like an edible paint by numbers. Actually, when it turned out, it looked almost like a hooked rug I suppose. As an adult, I look back on photos and appreciate the hard work and effort she put into making my day special.

My birthday is in April and sometimes falls on Easter. When I was a little girl my aunt used to make my birthday cake for me every year. I have to say my fondest memory of a cupcake was when I turned 21. The cupcake was a delicious buckeye inspired peanut butter and chocolate mix but it was really special because of who brought it to me. I was 2,000 miles away from home at school and had not seen my family in over a year when my sister rings the door bell standing with a lit candle and cupcake. It was the best!

My best cake memories are from my birthdays as a child. When I was younger, I didn't like birthday cake. So my parents would order a chocolate chip coffee cake from a bakery every year for my birthday party. My dad would get up early and make the long trip to this special bakery every year so I could have my cake on my birthday. My friends thought it was so weird that I liked coffee cake more than normal cake with frosting, but it was something special and I loved being unique. : )

Hello from Germany! My favourite cake memory has to be the Christmas fruit cake which my mother still makes each holiday season. As kids, we didn't like all the raisins and dried fruit in the cake, so one year picked off all the marzipan and sugar icing off the top of the cake. You can imagine her face when she unveiled the cake after Christmas dinner!

My favorite cake memory is from college. I decided to make a cake in the shape of a ribosome during DNA translation (so nerdy). I did this to get extra credit in my biochemistry class. The idea to make a cake in the shape of DNA becoming protein was crazy! I used Dots candy on toothpicks sticking out of a strangely shaped blue cake to represent the process. It had to be one really odd looking cake. I still remember being so nervous as I stood in front of the class explaining biochemistry with a cake. Then I had to serve the class my cake! Cupcakes would have been much better. Since then all my cakes have been a little more normal. I guess that is what happens when a scientist loves to bake.

My fondest cake memory was that of my little brother's funfetti cake, made by our mother. In the middle of the night we crept into the kitchen finding whatever quick things we could snack on – bologna, pickles, raisins, and big chunks of funfetti cake. We sat in hushed excitement by the faint glow of the night light in our shared bedroom. Today he is turning 24, I sure wish we lived closer, as I would love to share a big piece of cake with him again!

I had my fondest cake memory made this weekend. One year ago we found out our 2 year old son was gluten intolerant, since then I have used gluten free mixes to make him cupcakes to take along to birthday parties. I always felt a little bad since I know that they two don't compare. This weekend I made my first attempt at baking my own gluten free cupcakes from scratch, and proudly sent my son to a birthday party knowing he wasn't missing out. They had turned out as soft, and moist as any wheat cupcake/cake that I've tasted. I may never turn back myself! A day that was a breakthrough for us and for him to enjoy a treat that most kids his age take for granted. Now if I could only figure out how to ice them properly…..

I think my favorite cake moment was when I was asked to make an anniversary cake for a couple in our church who were celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. The reception turned out to be a wonderful event and the cake turned out lovely. It was such a blessing to honor a couple who were in their 90s and married 69 years. Celebrating this couple and their love and committment brought encouragement to me. I am by no means a professional cake baker or decorator, so this was definately a labor of love for the couple and their families. I was so blessed. Julie Down
