Secret Zipper Sweet Heart Purse w/ Free Pattern

Since last week was  Zipper Week and also Quinn’s 3rd birthday, I made her a sweet little heart purse with a secret zipper opening. Our sponsor, Zipit Zippers, has an awesome collection of 4″ zippers including this pretty magenta color.Zipper Week sponsored by Zipit Zippers

Let’s make one!

Download and print the Secret Zipper Sweet Heart Purse Pattern.

Cut 1 whole heart from outer fabric and 1 whole heart from your lining using the inside line (shown below) on the fold of your fabric. Also cut 2 half hearts from both your outer fabric and your lining fabric using the outside line as your guide (not shown)

I used some Pat Bravo and Kona solid from Fabricworm.

Also, from sturdy 1-sided iron on interfacing, cut a full heart and 2 1/2 hearts, 1/4″ smaller than pattern (except for the straight side of the 1/2 hearts which should be flush.

Iron shiny side of interfacing to the back side of the outer fabric of all three pieces.

Place two 1/2 hearts of outer fabric right-side facing and baste (largest stitch length) 1/2″ from straight edge.
Also baste stitch the straight edge of your lining fabric.

Iron both seams open and place together wrong-side facing. Be sure to line up the center seam perfectly, feel free to pin.

Take your pretty little zipper and sew the top closed with a few front and back stitches to avoid slippage.

Switch to your zipper foot. Lay your zipper perfectly aligned with the center seam of the lining and stitch all the way around the zipper. Stitch sever back and forth stitches at the top and bottom of the zipper to secure.

Oh, this is fun. Grab your thread cutter and open the seam over your zipper through both layers. Be sure not to cut through the zipper stitching.

Zipper!

Lay the whole heart layer of your outer fabric down and lay your zipper layer on top, right-side-down.

Switch back to your sewing foot. Avoiding the lining layer, stitch all the way around the edge of the heart through the 2 layers of outer fabric. Note. If you would like your handle sewn into the purse, you can add that in now, making sure the handle is tucked into the purse between the layers of outer fabric. I sewed my rope handle on afterwards.

Lay your whole heart layer of lining on top of the zipper, right side down.

sew around the outside of the lining, leaving a 4″ hole along one straight side for turning.

You can snip the bottom point of the heart if you think it will be bulky but not necessary.

Turn the entire piece right side out by working it all out through the hole in the lining and the outside through the zipper.

Stitch up the hole in the lining and push the lining into place inside the purse.

I used a little cotton rope as a handle but you can use anything. I simply tied knots in the ends and then sewed the knots to the bag securely. Since the purse is small, it wont have much weight to it. I love the idea of just having a wristlet strap on one side for an older girl (like um, me)
And your Secret Zipper Sweet Heart Purse is finished!

Stuff it with goodies and be on your way!

Start your zipper foot! You will be pleasantly surprised to find how easy zippers can be. Need some zippers to get started? Check out our intro to zippers post.

This is cute and I am sure my great granddaughters would love to have one for the little treasures they seem to have in pockets.
