Blue Steel, Super Heroes and CA or Bust: Friday I’m In Love

Jaime and Jacinda Prudent BabyWay that we amused ourselves: Yesterday Jaime shared a video how-to of her pretty new studio but earlier this week she emailed me this great photo that her camera had automatically snapped of her deep in frame-wall-creating-thought. She looked so inspired and also ridiculously good looking that I had to jump in front of my own studio wall and eat a disappearing ink pen. Kidding, I didn’t really eat it, it’s just a prop to make me look like I’m thinking really important creative thoughts too. Then I used my college degree in Graphic Design and photoshopped the two of us together in crafty bliss. This is what our long-distance relationship has come to, photoshopping ourselves together in photos. Sadness. But then there is this bit of great news!…

Poppy and Pinecone Left My Heart Print, Right: Mousehouse Kids Crafty Suitcase Tutorial

Crazy plan in the works: The Boneau Family is packing up the van and hitting the road next week. Dallas, Texas to Artesia, New Mexico (My husband’s home town) to Tucson, Arizona to San Diego, CA to my Jaime in LA, to Cedar City, Utah for my Sister-in-Law’s wedding to Durango to Santa Fe and HOME! Should be a wild ride! Where should we stay? What should we do? What is your best tip or toy for keeping 3 small children happy in the car for 2 weeks?

Pinterest pin you are loving: 3 at 12’s Confetti gift wrapping genius.

Fabric that caught my eye: The Rebekah Ginda for Birch Fabric Scamper collection is unisex perfection for a nursery. That Burrow print makes my heart hurt with it’s sweetness.

Funny thing my kid said:
Me: It’s a school day!
Quinn: It’s. A. Sleeping. Day. fingers back in mouth and… scene.
I hear ya sister, I need a sleeping day too.

Project I wish we had made: Superhero Masks from Cutesty Crafts with FREE template. I mean, I wish we had posted it but I really just wish I had made them because I really, really want them. So awesome.

My green thumb of jealousy: Exhibit A: Jacinda’s tomatoes… Exhibit B: Jaime’s tomatoes

No but really, Where should we stay? What should we do? What is your best tip or toy for keeping 3 small children happy in the car for 2 weeks?

Dan Zanes and Friends to sing along to. It’s the perfect kids’ music – fun enough for them, but good enough for us. 🙂

Fun links! I would say a portable dvd player or similar item is a must for kids in the car. Oh and benadryl if it’s not a stimulant for the kids. 😉

My parents own a timeshare out in Flagstaff, AZ so I have been out in that area quite a few times. 🙂 For something interactive in the car, perhaps a road sign bingo game (that would can whip up using printouts of common road signs and fun cardstock/scrapbooking paper)? I follow (and adore!!) your blog, and from what I gather, your children are rather young, so reading signs might not be plausible, but basing the game off of the different shapes of the signs might work (and be a fun way to learn shapes?). Maybe make an adventure book for them to fill out along the trip so that they can interact with their surroundings? (And take along those awesome crayon rolls and zipper pencil cases!)

For the big kids, I would recommend these places:
(Note that I’m a national park lover, so most of these are the national parks of the southwest. The Southwestern arts are interesting to me, but I’m not sure how kid-friendly the museums are but there are often arts&craft fairs with more interactive things for the kiddies. And, if you are interested in jewelry-making, the bead stores are amazing, thought with lots and lots of bitty baubles, again, I’m not sure how kid-friendly that kind of thing would be. BUT If you like the adventure book idea above, the national parks each have their own special stamp in their gift stores with the date. They are for a special National Park passport book sold in the gift shops that has some info about each park, but if you can have the kids stamp their own book too. 🙂 This is also a nifty way to let the kids have a souvenir from each park without spending money on random knick knacks.)

In CA: I’m a CA native, so … the novelty of CA things to do has likely worn off a lot, but the Joshua Tree NP is worth mentioning since it is close to San Diego.

In AZ:
Canyon de Chelly NM: [“de shAy”] A national monument of a rather under-appreciated canyon that is also a living Navajo reservation. While I love the Grand Canyon, I prefer the less-charted and quieter Canyon de Chelly.
http://www.nps.gov/cach/index.htm
Grand Canyon NP: … Well, you know. haha

In NM:
Carlsbad Caverns NP: This is somewhat near Artesia I think! There is a guided tour, as with most National Parks & Monuments. If you go back at night, you can see all the little bats come out of the caves to eat the buggies! Super cool, and really super cool to see when you’re a kid 🙂 Unfortunately, flash photography is not strictly not allowed because it disturbs the bat’s echolocation (a mini science lesson on bats for the kids!) so photography is out of the picture (har har).

… whew didn’t think i’d be writing this much! I hope this was helpful to you (and not too laborious!). Thanks for reading and being wonderful! 🙂

Thank you so much! These are awesome recommendations. I’m definitely going to do the adventure book and I know my MIL would love to take the kids to some caves! XOXo

The Arizona Inn in Tucson, AZ is a very pretty historic hotel in the middle of town, its really nice without being crazy expensive. Loew’s Ventana Resort is also nice, on a golf course, with an excellent Sunday all you can eat brunch and they have discounted summer rates. It is pretty hot here this time of year, so activities are limited to the swimming pool and AC.

Durango has a train that travels to Silverton, CO. (north of Durango). Its an old coal burning train and is a beautiful ride. The kids might like that. Durango also has a great farmers market on the weekends in the early afternoon. Nene’s for burritos, East by Southwest is a great sushi restaurant, and there is a great bike trail along the river!

oh, and about an hour outside of Durango is Mesa Verde National Park which has old cave dwellings. If you are traveling through Moab, Utah, I would highly suggest Arches National Park…its truly spectacular!

When my girls were little I bought them little toys/trinkets and wrapped them up–orange paper for the oldest and blue for the youngest. I did books, stickers, some fun play rings and necklesses, matchbox cars. When the girls got a bit older, I gave them each a new trash can to fill with stuff they wanted to take. It helped keep some of their things together. I also reccomend a digital camera just for them to use. Hours of entertainment of cars zooming by, street signs, the backs of mom and dad’s heads, their own feet, each other. Just the silly stuff that they see that we don’t.

Hi, Neat post. There’s a problem with your web site in web explorer,
might test this? IE still is the marketplace
leader and a big element of other folks will pass over your magnificent writing due to this problem.

Its like you read my mind! You seem to understand a lot approximately
this, such as you wrote the guide in it or something. I believe that you simply could do with some % to force the message home a bit,
but instead of that, this is excellent blog.
A great read. I’ll definitely be back.
