As a mom, I find my way through parenthood checking off milestones like first steps and first birthdays and in general trying to mold kind, intelligent, self-sufficient human beings with a sense of humor. I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job but lately the sassy demands of normally generous and pleasant little girls have been weighing on me. I’ve been wondering… what can I do to bring out the giving hearts that I know these two young ladies posses, especially as we head into the holidays? In a matter of weeks, their little minds will be exploding with wishes and dreams of piles of toys and sweets, and I’m ok with that, but at the same time, one of my own wishes has been to kick off the season with a different kind of milestone. An in-person introduction to the way people less fortunate than us live, and the opportunity to experience the spirit of giving.
When Babies “R” Us and Pampers invited us to take a shopping trip, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to introduce to my children to the joy of giving to others. My favorite part of the day was watching them just jump on the playground with the rest of the kids at the shelter like there was not a difference between them in the world, because really there isn’t. Their comfort in the situation was a beautiful moment. Clare gave her bracelet to an awesome little girl and her older brother dug into his pocket and pulled out his own bracelet to give to Clare. Heart-melting.
