Bergen, Norway | Pretty Prudent

The last leg of our Norwegian vacation was three beautiful summer days in Bergen – a vibrant city brimming with charm. Check out the first two legs of our journey here: A Norway Itinerary for Families – Part 1: Oslo and Akershus and here: A Norway Itinerary for Families – Part 2: The Fjords.

Bergen was so rich in scenery and amazing things to do as a family, I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Exploring Bergen

Where we stayed:

Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret: This Nordic Choice Hotel is right on the water, and has a delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner on offer as well as a spa. We really enjoyed this hotel.

What to See & Do:

Bryggen: This Unesco protected heritage site is the old merchant quarter of Bergen, and the only preserved business district from the Hanseatic period, and it’s still in use today with offices, shops, and restaurants. This area inspired the city of Arrendelle in Frozen and is just beyond charming.

Bryggen Tracteursted: Bryggen Tracteursted serves traditional Norwegian dishes in a stone dining hall from 1708; it’s a Bergen experience not to be missed.

Floibanen Funicular & Troll Forest: Walk to the base of the funicular from the wharf, then take the 10 minute journey up the mountain for a stunning view and an awesome playground. Scarlet and I spent hours here spotting trolls and just playing in the sun.

AND we found a smashed krone machine! Now Scarlet’s smashed penny collection includes Norwegian krones and South African rand. Finding this machine was maybe a highlight of the whole trip for her 🙂

Bergenhus Fortress and Rosenkrantz Tower: Walk to the medieval fortress and tour the tower, from the dungeon to the kings’ bedroom. Some buildings at the fortress date from the 1240’s. The view of the wharf is wonderful.

Hanne på Høyden: For a luxurious prix fixe contemporary Norwegian meal, head to Hanne på Høyden.

Bergen Aquarium: This aquarium is just fun! Scarlet had a blast, the penguins were her favorite. You can pick up a small ferry directly to the aquarium, just wait at the wharf by the fish market.

Shopping: Definitely spend an afternoon walking about the beautiful neighborhoods of Bergen and maybe snagging some antiques. And, oh, the flower shops in Bergen are so joy inducing in Spring!

Ulriksbanen Cable Car: The best view of all is from the top of the cable car. Do it.

I love reading about your incredible trip to Norway, and it’s super helpful as I’m currently planning a trip for my own family this summer. How long was your trip?

Best wishes,

Laura
