Jugo Verde: A Wonderfully Addictive Elixer

Jugo VerdeLate this past Summer, the girls and I spent a few days at Karisma Resorts’ Generations Riviera Maya. Karisma Hotels + Resorts is known for their gourmet all-inclusive cuisine which always features mountains of amazing fresh fruits, veggies and fresh-squeezed juices. I quickly became enamored with this “green juice” which had a delicious and unique flavor that I couldn’t place. After a vacation of requesting a glass several times each day, I came home longing for my fix. After failed recreation attempts at home, I begged the Karisma chefs to share their secret recipe and they were happy to help. My favorite healthy drink will be in regular rotation to give me a boost as my body fights colds, allergies, and general holiday gluttony over the next few months.

Jugo Verde

Read on for the recipe and the mysterious ingredient that had me perplexed!…

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of orange juice
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 2 slices of pineapple
  • 1 cactus leaf
  • 2 cups grapefruit juice
  • 1 bunch of spinach.

Directions:

  • Blend all the ingredients together and strain. Serve cold.

Tip: Eureka! I’ve always noticed cactus leaf in the store and wondered how, when, and why (ha) to prepare it.

To prepare; trim the “eyes,” to remove any remaining prickers, and outside edges of the pads with a vegetable peeler. Trim off any dry or fibrous areas and rinse thoroughly to remove any stray prickers and sticky fluid.

Cheers! Stay healthy my friends!

This sounds amazing! I would love to try this one out myself, except I would have no idea how to get my hands on cactus leaves in Germany. I am also not the bigget fan of grapefruit – is the grapefuit flavor very noticable?

I would skip the grapefruit (and cactus since you are in Germany : ) and play with adding a bit of lemon or lime Rae. Enjoy!

So glad to have found this. We just returned from Karisma El Dorado Royale. I’ve been trying to recreate the Jugo Verde for an entire week, and it just was too thick. (Yummy and healthy-tasting, but not like at the resort. So excited to have the actual recipe from our fave week ever! đŸ™‚
