Digitally Disconnect and Create a Woven Cork Board Family Base Center

This post is sponsored and inspired by VTech.

I am obsessed with getting organized this year. I want the whole family to put down our “screens” and digitally detox, but I still want to keep everything together, without the help of gadgets. When VTech asked to sponsor a post on Pretty Prudent in support of their cordless phones, it was the perfect excuse to get to work creating a prettier version of the “refrigerator door” organization-concept my mom worked so well with for all those years. It’s the ideal “analog” system, combined with a VTech cordless phone that is affordable and durable, with oh-so-crisp speakerphone quality, call-waiting, and up to 14 minutes of voicemail; but without the social media, games, and apps from which we need a break.

How to Weave on a Cork Board I decided to take my latest craft obsession, weaving, and combine it with my new obsession with organization to create this woven cork board, then use it as a family base station to hold our calendar, shopping lists, school notices, tickets, and more.

How to Weave on a Cork Board Watch the video above for the step-by-step tutorial to create a warp using just thumbtacks and string, then weave it with yarn for a textural, beautiful take on the family base station.

Thank you to VTech for making this awesome phone, sponsoring this DIY Video, and inspiring us to participate in a digital detox by creating this DIY family base station, which will be the hub of our home.

Thanks for the inspiration, Jaime! Been meaning to start a board like this at my house. I miss having a landline! Part of me wants to throw out the smartphones and get back to simpler those times. Sick of seeing everyone’s faces hiding behind screens 🙁

You are so welcome! The cork board is really fun to make but even more fun to have in the house, I love seeing what the kid decides is worth pinning! And by pinning, I mean using an actual 3-dimensional pin.

Analog is my favorite says the Luddite with a smart phone. Really miss having a landline. Love a cork board.

Weaving and being more “in the now” are awesome obsessions I need to dive into. Thx for the reminder ; )

This is definitely on my to do list. My kids can’t see my electronic calendar. They want to know what’s going on – totally makes sense. The weaving is brilliant because let’s face it, cork boards are not pretty.

Pretty weaving! How long does it take to make? We are trying to detox this year too I didn’t think about a family paper calendar and now I think we need one so we can see everything as a whole.

Love this idea. I actually bought a big frame to make my own wipe-off calendar, but have yet to get it done. I am all about the kids seeing and being a part of the organization.

Love this! I am super disorganized so my cork board saves my life. Also, I love to weave. Using the tacks is genius.

Digital detox! Yes! You know this is my M.O. just not always executed as well as it should be. Great idea here to help the family focus! Thank you!

I am so on board with this, pardon the pun! I might be one of the few people who still prefer a paper calendar, so this is right up my alley. There are so many things that can’t be made digital and it’s nice to have a pretty place to put it. Thanks! I’m off to get supplies!
