Hot Mess Mommy: DIY Braided Headband

I have been hanging on to the October Anthropologie catalog, loving all of the “Hot Mess Mommy” hair-do’s. I was thinking that I would get my hands on some beautiful fancy embroidered ribbon n such and try out a few headbands. Imagine my delight when Ruby from Cakies did a Braided Headband Tutorial as a guest post for Smile & Wave. Here is mine. I love it. Clare loves it too. It will even work on a baldy-bean baby!

I used Kleo By Alexander Henry and an unknown orange fabric gifted from Jaime.

Quick Tip: Wall Baskets

Carleton and I picked up one of these baskets in the Orinoco Delta on a trip around Venezuela (the little one in the middle).  We bought it because some local Warao Indians made a special trip to see us specifically to ask us to buy it, who could say no to that?  Our families saw the basket and thought we had a love affair with baskets and started gifting them to us, and they just piled up.  But when I decided to try to recreate a little slice of the Ace Hotel Palm Springs in my backyard it was the perfect opportunity to put them to use.  I couldn’t get any sort of screw to penetrate whatever exterior walls were built with in 1930 so I just hot glued them to the wall.  They have totally stayed put. Seriously simple and I love looking at them.

10 Tools/Supplies for Making Hair Clips

my niece Juliette. eee, the cuteness.

One of my favorite crafts is making hair clips for the girlies. They are so easy and at $8-$20 for a pretty clip at a boutique, very prudent to make on your own.

I’m going to be showing you how to make a bunch of different styles over the next weeks/month/year (we’ll see how it goes) so I thought I would give a little list of supplies for you to gather in preparation.

It’s probably stuff that you have around the house, if not, it’s all readily available.

Check out the list after the jump…

Before & After Ikat Footstool DIY

Footstools are crazy useful (vanity pouf?  chair to scoot under a desk in a small space? foot rest?  end table?) and so easy to find at thrift shops.  I picked this one up at the National Council of Jewish Women’s thrift shop on Fairfax for a few bucks.  Yeah, it was stained and gross, but it had great bones.  I even liked the black legs but they don’t jive with my interior.  The fabric was an amazing ebay find ( for five yards!) which I also used for the coordinating pelmets in our living room.
A footstool is a great beginner upholstery project, I walk you through the steps after the jump…

Book Review: Weekend Sewing

I’m a huge fan of Heather Ross’ fabric collections (see the baby food jar fabric tea lights) so I thought I’d pick up her book
Weekend Sewing: More Than 40 Projects and Ideas for Inspired Stitching.  It’s beautifully designed and just feels nice to hold and browse, with perky illustrations and gorgeous photography by John Gruen.  It includes projects for a relaxing weekend of stitching including a few laid-back clothing pieces for mom, adorable baby basics, and some fun home and accessory projects, replete with patterns for all.  While the patterns are all contained on just two sheets, meaning you need a tracing wheel and tracing paper to actually use them more then once, I really didn’t mind because the projects are so universal they should be reused to make gift after gift.

A few pictures of the projects I made and link to this free Quick Garden Gloves pattern from the book after the jump…

Kevin’s Famous Scones

My sister and her family are visiting for the long weekend. One of my many great joys in seeing them is requesting one of my brother-in-laws baked goods, usually his famous scones! He has been generous enough to share his recipe with Prudent Baby saying, “I make these on days that I have to work on weekends. Although it is not fun missing weekend time with Sunshine and crew, I think they may look forward to it. Bad for the arteries but good for the heart.”

Doesn’t he sound dreamy?
