Last Spring I was lucky enough to fall into an invitation to join a book club. I have been in book clubs in the past and I have loved every single one, even the clubs that were thinly veiled excuses to drink wine with friends. Or maybe especially those. This particular book club however, includes a teacher, two journalists, and several writers. It’s legit. On top of that, each host prepares food and beverages to match the theme of the book. And on top of THAT, hosts come to the meeting with prepared questions, observations and discussion guides. This book club does not mess around. So all this is to say that the first week in December, we will be meeting to discuss my very first book selection. So much pressure! So what I need from you bookworms, is your suggestions for my debut book pick. What has knocked your nerdy socks off this year?
Of these books, the other books that we are reading this year, The Goldfinch and The Song of the Lark have been my favorite reads.
Out of The Dust by Karen Hesse
The Sympathizer: A Novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen
Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal
THE SAME SKY by Amanda Eyre Ward
I am such a book nerd! One standout from this year is The Book of Speculation, by Erika Swyler
I just finished Lowland by Jhumpa Lahari.
I highly recommend it as well as all her
other books.
Great a books! I this year love two books: “Snow flower and the secret fan” Lisa See and Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole
The best book by far that my book club read this year is “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr.
We just did The Goldfinch which we agreed was the group where we talked about one book the longest. It was controversial within us so this tension made for stimulating discorse! The snacks were fun. Lots of “pills” (Mike n Ike’s, m&ms,snow caps, etc. And of course, vodka for a drink! We laughed that we were just missing the leftover deli plate!
We also did All the Light We Cannot See and Cutting for Stone. These both had fantastic discussions
Oh interesting! I love this, and it looks so great.
