Unicorn Horn Party Hat

3 years ago I posted photos of my daughter Clare’s unicorn 5th birthday party, however I never shared how I made the unicorn horns, which happened to be a huge hit. This week I received an email asking when the heck I was going to post that (oopsy!) so I put on my thinking cap and “made a point” (ha!) of pulling together a little unicorn horn DIY.

Shall we?

Start by cutting a 9″x12″ sheet of adhesive glitter foam in half. You will need a 6″x9″ (approx) piece for each horn. These Fiskar non-stick scissors were really nice for cutting the adhesive backing.

Draw a line from the bottom left corner to 1″ in from the top right and cut.

Peel the paper backing and roll the foam into a horn shape. Most adhesive will hold strong, if it does not, use a glue gun to secure the edge.

Trim the bottom of the cone straight.

Gently push a bit of the adhesive backing inside the cone to help it keep it’s shape.

Snip up 1/4″ all the way around the opening to create fringe that can be fanned into a flat base as seen in this finished sample. Set horn aside.

From the remaining foam, cut a circle approximately 1/2″ larger in diameter than the base of the horn so that it is the same size as the fanned out base. Stick that (sticky side up) to the bottom of a plastic headband.

Spreading out the fanned fringe of the horn base, adhere it to the foam circle on the headband.

Now it’s time to decorate! For Clare’s party we used sequin trim, glued with a hot glue gun. For this example we used rhinestone ribbon with Alene’s Quick Dry Tacky Glue. You can use anything sparkly and magical. Just wrap the strand around the horn in a spiral, gluing as you go.

As you can see, these are made very simply and are not about perfection so make a bunch with a smile on your face. You are about to make a dozen, or maybe just one little girl, very happy.      Unicorn horn party hat
