Our love for all things matte black continues with this DIY Clay Napkin Holder. I’ve been holding on to a block of black clay since I made the polymer clay rope baskets, and thought this would be the perfect project to put it to use. Although that design on the sides looks pretty intricate, it only took about five seconds to make. Wanna learn how?

DIY Clay Napkin Holder
This napkin holder was made to hold beverage napkins which were 5″ x 5″ when folded. If you are going to make one for larger or smaller napkins, I advise making your napkin holder about 3/4″ to 1″ larger than the size of the folded napkins.
Roll your clay out so it’s about to 1/4″ thick.
Use a knife or x-acto knife to cut out four sides and a base. My sides were 2″ x 6″ and the base was “6 x 6”.
Use a piece of lace or lace trim to make the impression on the clay. Lay it out across the clay.
Use a clay rolling pin to press the lace into the clay.
Remove the lace trim to reveal your design.
Assemble the napkin holder on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Roll pieces of clay between your palms to make clay snakes. These will be used to help reinforce the walls of the box.
Press the clay snakes into the bottom edges of the box, and smooth out with a clay smoothing tool or your fingers.
Now, smooth out the corners of the box so that all the sides are connected.
Make a weight by rolling a ball of clay between your hands and flattening it out. Use the same lace trim to make an impression.
Put the napkin holder and weight in the oven and bake according to the directions on the package.
this is beautiful. I think I might make one. Only use white and paint it to match the apples in my kitchen. I have a stand up napkin holder and it’s always hard to get one out. they get stuck. this would be much better and easier for my 5-yr-old too. what great idea!
You definitely should, that sounds lovely. Send us a picture on facebook!
