New Music

The Husband hooked me up with a bunch of new music for Christmas. It wasn’t hard to do, I hadn’t acquired a new CD in over a year. I was in a rut of listening to Scarlet’s Dance Attack 2009 on repeat under the dictatorship of a three year old. He saw that an intervention was required. Now if you are a music buff, most of these gems won’t be news to you but if, like me, you have been hiding under a rock for a while, you might find something you like! And most of the digital versions of these CD’s are between $5-$10 on Amazon! I have found great joy listening to grown-up (but mostly child-friendly) music while I hide in the craft cave til the week hours of the morning.

Jaime and Carleton are much better at keeping on the cutting edge, maybe she will have some more obscure stuff to add. Maybe you do too! Please do leave a comment. If we like it best, you will win a yard of pom-poms from my stash!

See my new music stash after the jump.

Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs Weathervanes – Freelance Whales Vampire Weekend – Contra

Florence and the Machine – Lungs

The XX – XX

The National – High Violet

The Black Keys – Brothers

Band of Horses – Infinite Arms

Tame Impala – Innerspeaker

Andrew Bird – Noble Beast & Useless Creatures

Beach House – Teen Dream Nathaniel Rateliff – In Memory of Loss
Down the Way – Angus & Julia Stone

What did you like the best? Did you pick up any new music?

OMG! Andrew Bird is AMAZING! I saw him a couple of years ago when he opened for Nickel Creek here… when you see him perform, he gives you inspiration and a whole new meaning to his art.

Thanks for the heads up! I have a couple of those cds already! I’d been wondering if the XX was any good. I really like that “islands” song. Do you like the whole album?

I used to know all kinds of obscure bands and stuff but then you have kids and the music gods send you to the back of the line. I’ll have to check out some of the others you posted!

The first 2 on your list are my favorites! My husband recently turned me on to Mumford & Sons and I am in love. Arcade Fire is also great–they put on a cool live show (which I've seen only on Austin City Limits…lame). Looking forward to checking out the other albums you mentioned–I need a break from my 15 month old daughter's favorite CD!

Whoooop!! Go the Aussies down the bottom! LOVE Angus & Julia Stone! By far the best on your list πŸ™‚
I will be heading to iTunes to purchase some of the others tomorrow!!
xx Stacey

First of all, The National High Violet is amazing. On vinyl it's somehow even better. But my current favorite grown-up CD that my 2- and 3-year-olds also LOVE (as in, they can sing several whole songs) is Tripping Lily (not at all hippy-trippy as the name might suggest). You can listen to songs here:

Enjoy all your new music – what a great gift!

What a nice touch to add dimension for your readers! Obviously, I love to know what you're up to in the crafty world, but to also know what tunes could be ultimate creating music? So special and fun!

It's like you've rifled through my itunes. Except that you're missing some others (if you don't already have them)…

Citizen Cope (the Clarence Greenwood Recordings)
Ingrid Michaelson
Iron + Wine
Jenny Lewis
Joshua Radin
All of The National albums (one is not enough!)
Ray LaMontagne
Rocky Votolato
Jose Gonzalez
The Temper Trap
Brandi Carlile
Amos Lee

What a great gift!

i'm musically out of it too, but i like to listen to y rock on WXPN on my computer while in my craft room.

The Magic Numbers – The Runaway
stars- the five ghosts
blonde redhead- penny sparkle
Ra Ra Riot – The Orchard
Owen Pallet – Heartland
Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings – I Learned the Hard Way

ANY AND ALL MAN MAN cd's! Along with Cat Stevens (or Yusuf Islam)

Ah, these are all such awesome suggestions! Thanks ladies. I, hilariously, also rely completely on my husband for music. If not, I would be stuck with what my 2 year old selects…not pretty. She has her own random names for them too which I have had to decipher slowly over the past few months. One is the "chicken song" and it has nothing to do with chickens. Imagine a 2 year old in the back seat repeating "chicken, chicken" over and over until you happen to land on the appropriate song. Anyway, from my husbands picks I would also suggest Jonsi's new "go live" and Sufjan's latest. Blitzen Trapper is also great.

You mean there are other songs than "if you're happy and you know it?" I'll have to check these out πŸ˜‰ I'm still a sucker for old school Jewel.

You could never go wrong with Mumford & Sons, Vampire Weekend, or Band of Horses. Your new list is such a great musical start to another year! If you like those, turn your ears to: (in addition to some awesome suggestions previously mentioned)

1. Anya Marina
2. Regina Spektor
3. Au Revoir Simone
4. Belle & Sebastian
5. Beulah
6. Coconut Records
7. Death Cab for Cutie
8. A Fine Frenzy
9. Feist
10. The Format
11. Joe Purdy
12. The Kooks
13. La Rocca
14. Meiko
15. Nada Surf
16. Neutral Milk Hotel
17. The Noisettes
18. Paolo Nutini
19. The Perishers
20. Priscilla Ahn

Blood/Candy by the Posies is a must have – it topped several best-of lists for 2010 and I could not recommend it any higher.
LOVE Beach House and Band of Horses!

I got a live Phish DVD for Christmas and my son goes nuts for it! It makes mommy proud for sure. I've been a Keller Williams fan for many years and he just released an album titled Kids, but all his stuff is kid-friendly.

Always happy for new music suggestions. Great post!

Ok here is my list to add, not all of it is new, actually most of it is not new,

Animal Collective
Azure Ray
Ben Kweller (specifically the Sha Sha album)
Blitzen Trapper
Bon Iver
Bright Eyes
Sufjan Stevens
Built to Spill
David Bazan
The Decemberists
Devendra Banhart
The Duchess and the Duke
Elliott Smith
The Faint
Fleet Foxes
Gingerbread Patriots
Handsome Furs
The Helio Sequence
Josh Ritter
Loretta Lynn (Van Lear Rose album that Jack White produced)
M. Ward
Matt Pond PA

Pedro The Lion (David Bazan)
Peter Bjorn and John
Portugal the Man
Rilo Kiley
Rocky Votolato
She & Him
The Shins
TV on the Radio
William Elliott Whitmore
Wolf Parade

Ok so some of these bands aren't even together anymore, but their music is so good

Oh man, I got so excited that I deleted my comment by accident. Oops! Discovering and listening to music is one of my favorite favorite things. I've read through the commments and agree with, like, so much here. My additions would be:

The Avett Brothers (the first time I heard Mumford & Sons I thought it was a Avett song I didn't know yet!)

The Low Anthem
Timber Timbre
Buke & Gass
Gogol Bordello

And for family/kids music, I can't recommend highly enough the Many Hands CD. It's a benefit CD for Haiti relief, and features a ton of great musicians, both new to the family music scene and acts that have been around for a while. The CD is great, and the radio show that spawned the label that spawned the CD is totally worth listening to. Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child; Indie music for indie kids. Bill is a great DJ, and the music is really good.

I feel your pain…I'm driving to work and realizing I've been singing along to Yo Gabba Gabba the whole way there. Sad! I'm totally in love with Gorilla Manor by Local Natives. Amazing!

um not trying to be a pain or anything but the BAND is actually called Freelance Whales and the ALBUM is called Weathervanes. It seemed like every other artist is listed band first and album name second. just trying to help!

i LOVE the black keys, we have a number of their albums and our two boys age 5 & 2 and a half will ALWAYS insist we play them when we're driving! yeah baby! πŸ™‚

i've been looking for some new music so will definitely be checking your list out πŸ™‚

also, i LOVE neko case (middle cyclone) – she's also a big hit here with the kids

x candice x

I just made the pillow dress and LOVE it. next time maybe I'll actually make it with a pillow the kids wont sit in front of the tv for 3 hours:-) Anyway, based on your above list I just wanted to let you know I think you'd like my husbands Americana album Eden. His name is Craig Bancoff, you can listen to his stuff at, maybe his stuff can bring you as much fun as your projects have brought me!

Definitely way late on this post, but the top three on your list are some of my favorites. How did we survive so long without artists like Mumford and Sons?? They do have one child-unfriendly song on their album, and it kind of sneaks up on you (though I'm sure you've heard it by now). Anyway, did Arcade Fire totally deserve their Grammy for Album of the Year or what? They're so creative!
