Scrappy Tripalong Tassel Floor Pillow

Scrappy Tripalong Floor Pillow

Back in January, I caught the Scrappy Tripalong bug that was sweeping Instagram. Quilters were busting out scrappy squares and consequently busting through their fabric scraps. Me? I managed to make four squares. Then I turned them into a cute scrappy floor pillow! They were too pretty to wait in W.I.P limbo for all eternity. Here’s how I made my Scrappy Tripalong Tassle Floor Pillow.

1. Create the front of your pillow. I used the scrappy tripalong tutorial to make 4 squares and then sewed them together.

2. Layer the top over a layer of cotton and a layer of batting with the batting sandwiched in the middle. Pin or secure with adhesive and quilt as desired. I used my walking foot and did straight “stitch in the ditch” (along the seams) in both directions, but feel free to get creative with hand or machine quilting.

3. Tim the extra fabric and batting from around the edge.

The cover is complete. Let’s get fancy! I added some quick store-bought tassels to the corners.

4. Tie the string of each tassel in a knot.

5. Sew the string of each tassel to one of the corners with the tassel facing in.

6. For the back, select a complimentary fabric, a yard will suffice,  and IRON it. I mean what kind of amateur would be so lazy to…

7. Moving on, cut 2 rectangles of fabric, 26″ tall x 20-25″ wide (depending on your fabric width) Turn the inside edges of the widths under 1″ and then under 1″ again.

8. Sew straight along seam to secure. Overlap rectangles to create a 26×26″ square.

9. Lay quilt top down on top with right sides facing.

10. Make sure the tassels are centered in the pillow and pin to secure.

11. Sew all around the outer edge with 1/4″-1/2″ seam allowance.

12. Turn right-side-out and fill with a 24″ pillow form or better yet, an ugly pillow that you already have.

Word of warning, if you have more than one child, you will not get away with making just one. Back to the cutting board!

The front is sewn up from an assortment of beautiful fabrics from fabricworm, plus a few of my own fabrics and fabric by my friend Carol Van Zandt. The gorgeous Jay-Cyn Designs, Camp Modern-Flight, on the back can be purchased here.
