How to Ice A Cake With A Cake Stencil

A cake stencil is a super easy and fun way to spruce up a cake. I used Jacinda’s How to Ice A Cake tute, along with her Evil Buttercream Icing recipe to make this cake for Scarlet and Niko’s Third Birthday Fiesta, and I added a cake stencil.

I also made the layers different colors, just for fun.

Let me walk you through How to Ice A Cake With A Cake Stencil after the jump…

Have you ever used a cake stencil? What’s your method? And does the site of the yellow make you as sad as it made me? Let us know in the comments, you could win that amazing Belle & Blue Chair.

The Thrifter’s Revenge

Last April I went to Canton for the first time and happened upon a booth filled with the most gorgeous vintage table cloths. They were all bright white, ironed and folded, hanging in a row. I gasped for air, brushed my fingertips along the edges and promised to come back later as it was one of the first booths we had visited. But then when I went back it was nowhere to be found. Like a DREAM!

I went back in the Fall and looked again. No luck. But this past weekend we went again and there it was right in front of me! In that instant I decided to spend every last penny in my pocket on vintage table clothes. I mean, I might never see them again!

Am I crazy? What should I do with them? Since none of them actually fit my table. HA!

Give me guidance oh Prudent Mamas and you might win a LOVELY child’s chair from Belle & Blue!

Non-Material Birthday Gifts

I think I’ve mentioned to you that my daughter loves elephants, so for her birthday last week I planned to take her to the Los Angeles Zoo to view their new Asian Elephant exhibit. I am lucky enough to have a few connections that allowed us to get a behind the scenes glimpse at how the elephants live. What is your kid’s favorite animal? Is there a local zoo you could visit? Most offer great kid’s programs. Or maybe there is some other activity that your child would enjoy doing on their big day? I think memories like these (will they remember this far back? well, there’s always pictures) are often the best birthday gifts of all.

The Los Angeles Zoo has done an amazing job of creating a home and caring for these majestic animals. Take a look at what we saw in the elephant exhibit at the LA Zoo after the jump…

The Lazy Quilter: Easy Half Square Triangle Trick

I do so love the idea of quilting. But in actuality, the precision is not something I naturally excel at. I’m all about pretty fabrics and quick projects. Therefore I deem myself the lazy quilter.

I whipped up this pieced pillow for the Craft Room Redesign Project in about an hour and a half, and I want to share with you the secret for making half square triangles in a jiff. I don’t even have a 1/4″ presser foot or any fancy quilting paraphernalia. You can use half square triangle units to make pinwheels, which are adorbs and very trendy right now. You can also make sailboats and lots of other cuteness with them. Give it a shot, it’s a good first-quilting-step.

Get the Easy Half Square Triangle Trick after the jump. And tell us, are you a lazy quilter? Do you have any lazy quilting tips for us? Your comment could win you a gorg Belle & Blue Chair.

Last Minute Dinner: Ricotta Gnocchi with Red Pepper Sauce

I detest grocery shopping. DETEST. It takes FOREVER. It costs SO MUCH. It has so many steps – making a list, driving to the store, finding everything, bringing it home, unloading it, rearranging the refrigerator, shoving it all in there. Ugh, I can’t stand it. I know I’m the whiniest whiner ever, but there it is. Point being, I often have long stretches between trips to the store and end up having to scavenge the pantry to pull dinner together. I recently asked on facebook what some of your go-to pantry meals are and there were so many creative suggestions. I was inspired to try to pull more dinners from the pantry and share some with you. My first one is ricotta gnocchi with red pepper sauce. This requires ricotta which is not so much a pantry staple, but the red pepper sauce is pulled together from a jar and my hubs AND EVEN MY CHILD are total fans. The key thing is that this sauce takes about 5 minutes to make. Maybe you’ll want to add it to your rotation.

Get the recipe for Ricotta Gnocchi with Red Pepper Sauce after the jump. And tell us in the comments, what are your last minute dinner staples? This week’s favorite comment wins that stunning Belle & Blue Chair.
