Pretty Prudent Trend: Matte Black

At first I couldn’t tell if I was just clinging on to the dark hues of winter, but then I realized it was the contrast of matte black with bright white and spring colors that was really drawing me in. The thing I like most about matte black is that it perfectly melds together the aged look of rustic decor, with the clean finish usually associated with modern decor.  I’m not quite ready to go all glossy and modern, so this is a happy medium. Consider picking up an accessory or two and notice how it can easily bring new life to your space and style.

Easy Summer Muumuu: Take 3

IMG_1952_1
I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since we shared the Easy Summer MuuMuu with you. Geeze, time flies. Next, we shared the Easy Summer MuuMuu: Take 2, which had no ruffles across the front and was a bit easier. This version that Quinn is showing off here is the same as the original muumuu, but I left all the edges with exposed serger stitching. That’s it! I love it just as much.

Not sure where to even begin with a serger? Check out What is a Serger? What Does a Serger Do? Besides this project, you can also start off with our Simple Serger Napkins.

Continue your spring dress sewing with the one shoulder dress, snappy toddler dress, racerback dress, and pillowcase dress.

DIY Tassel Magnets

10
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! We have a super easy and adorable tutorial for you today. After making our Martenitsa tassels we got on a kick and tried out tassel magnets. I’m happy to say they were a great success. You can use them for your fridge, or to give as a hostess gift for a party. Change them up by making them with different colored yarn too. We chose to make ours out of baker’s twine since they were going to be used in Jaime’s kitchen.

Ring in Spring Inspiration

Along with having book projects on the mind, we’ve also been bursting with spring inspiration. A simple trip back to the Los Angeles Flower Mart always helps to kick that in gear. In Southern California we’ve had some pretty summer-like temperatures happening, and along with daylight savings time, it feels as though spring is in full swing. We’ve rounded up a bit of “springspiration” for the home, style, and table that has had us head over heels for the new season.

6 Little Things that Go A Long Way… from Pro Stylists!

Thank you to P&G for sponsoring this post and creating products that make life simpler. They are truly little things that go a long way!
Pretty Prudent HomeJaime and I are knee deep in a four day photoshoot for Pretty Prudent Home! It’s fast-paced business but that’s the way we both like to work so we are in the zone. In fact, I have to get back to styling some shots in a few minutes but I wanted to jump on and share some of the little tips we have learned from the amazing crew of stylists and photographers we are working with this week. Inspired by the simplicity and convenience of Tide Pods – the handiest laundry detergent packets ever. You can pick up a pack from Target, toss one into your load of laundry, and be on your way. Doesn’t get much easier than that. We asked the ladies for a quick tip for the home, entertaining, and life in general that can make things a little easier, more beautiful, and more stylish. Just like a photoshoot, life as a mom can be stressful and fast-paced and also beautiful and gratifying and it never hurts to have a few little things go a long way, not just in laundry but in all parts of life!

#1: When pouring a beverage from one container to another, run the liquid against a skewer and it will neatly pour down the center, without splashing.

#2. Keep a solid collection of white tableware, serving bowls and platters on hand. They will work for every season, every party theme, and can be changed up by varying linens and flowers.

#3. Submerge wilted herbs in ice water to revive them to their former fresh glory.

4. Use a damp paintbrush to clean up messy frosting from the edge of your cake plate.

#5. Make a baby laugh for a photo by faking a sneeze. Babies think sneezes are hilarious.

#6. Keep a small kit of emergency products like baby wipes, pins, stain remover and nail scissors ready to go for long days of work or fun.

Martenitsa Tassels & Pom-Poms Tutorial

Martenitsa Tassels & Pom-Poms Tutorial
Last week we shared the first two Martenitsa tutorials (bracelet and puppet dolls) from The Saturday Market Project. If you missed that, here’s a little background on the Martenitsa story…

In Bulgaria there is a centuries old tradition of celebrating Baba Marta aka ‘Grandmother March Day.’ It begins on March 1st and continues all month long. The entire celebration is all about welcoming in the fresh blooms of spring. Along with the festivities, is the tradition of making Martenitsa adornments to give to friends and family, which you wear all month long to promote happiness and prosperity.

Martenitsa Tassels & Pom-Poms Tutorial

Today we will be tackling tassels and pom-poms. They are insanely easy to make and are great tutorials to have on hand if you want to decorate gifts or make cute garlands. Don’t forget to stop by The Saturday Market Project shop to see their array of high-quality craft supplies, and get craft inspiration by checking out their projects.

5-Minute Spring Flower Corsage

5-Minute Spring Flower Corsage

The other day I went over to the Los Angeles Flower Market to pick up some beautiful ranunculus to take to Jaime’s casa. If you haven’t ever been there, I highly, highly recommend it. You are completely surrounded by every flower you could ever imagine and they are, for the most part, at an incredibly affordable price. We kept gawking at them and couldn’t let them just hang out in the vase, so we found a way to wear them by making a 5-minute flower corsage.

I Scream for Family Ice Cream Night

This post and all its delicious fresh ice cream, mix-ins, and waffle cones are brought to you by Marble Slab Creamery.

Marble Slab CreameryOne thing that I missed when I lived in California, and there wasn’t much, was the change of seasons. Actually it was not so much the change of seasons but the rituals and traditions that happen when you live in a seasonally-focused location like Rhode Island where I grew up. From apple-picking in the Fall to decorating for Christmas, to my mom sticking fake flowers in the dirt before Easter brunch because it was still snowing (sorry Mom, you’ve been outed.) It actually did look real though, try it. One of my favorite Summer traditions and fondest memories of childhood was going out as a family for ice cream. Yes, I know this child is wearing a blazer, I don’t ask questions.

We would all sit on top of a picnic table enjoying our treats. Whatever flavor we wanted. My brother and step-dad ordered pistachio, the twins ordered bubblegum, my mom’s favorite was black raspberry, and I mixed it up but my favorite was peppermint stick. I would pull out all the mint candies and then eat them at the end. One scoop in a cone or bowl. With three kids we had to be frugal, none of those fancy toppings like peanuts or hot fudge, ha. We didn’t get to eat out or travel much but my memories of these nights eating ice cream as a family, surrounded by laughter and crickets, with the stars above make me feel like we had everything we needed. Didn’t we? (more…)
