DIY Ribbon Wands

Do you guys remember Get in Shape Girl? Omg, as I kid I thought the whole ribbon-on-a-stick thing was the coolest thing ever. So I thought since it’s Ribbon Week sponsored by The Ribbon Retreat, I’d whip up some ribbon wands for the littles in my life. You can see the pure joy these wands brought the girls in our Ribbon Week video.

It takes just about 15 minutes to turn this…

Into a ribbon wand they’ll go nuts for.

And BTW, who said boys can’t play with ribbon? What’s even cooler is that black ribbon has a glow-in-the-dark stripe down the center. You know you’ll be waking up to that waving in your face sooner or later.

This ribbon projects is quite simple, and the kids love ’em. Find out how to make a pretty twirly ribbon wand… (more…)

Cloud & Ribbon Rainbow Decorative Pillow

It’s day two of Ribbon Week sponsored by The Ribbon Retreat, and it’s no wonder that Clare is over the moon about the event after helping to make this Cloud & Rainbow Ribbon Travel Pillow. This is a simple project with stunning results. A beautiful handmade gift for anyone who loves rainbows. And who doesn’t love rainbows? I do have to admit that I was tempted to make a rain cloud with shimmering streamers of ribbon rain falling down. I still might, I like a little gloom.

Let’s do it! (more…)

Ribbon Dress

Welcome to the first tutorial of a week full of beautiful ribbon projects. It’s Ribbon Week, sponsored by The Ribbon Retreat.

This ribbon dress is inspired by a dress that I brought home from Mexico for Scarlet. She loved it so much that when Jacinda and Clare came to visit LA, we spent an afternoon in the studio whipping up these beauties, and eating macarons, and drinking champagne (just the mommies, of course – like we would share our macarons).

Just in time for beautiful Spring breezes and Easter, it’s The Ribbon Dress! Let us show you how to make one.

Brown Sugar Pie

Have you ever heard of brown sugar pie? The closest I can come to describing the flavor is like a pecan pie without the pecans. So, in other words, delicious. I recently received a copy of From Our Grandmothers’ Kitchens: A Treasury of Lost Recipes Too Good to Forget, and amongst all the fun old-fashioned recipes (tomato butter, pickled peaches, shoofly cake) I was taken by the idea of brown sugar pie. This pie is so simple to make, and has the rich flavor of brown sugar with a deep, nutty browned butter twist.

I love this pie because it’s one of those things you’ll usually have most of the ingredients for and you can whip it up in a jiff. I tweaked the recipe a bit, check it out…. (more…)

I Wish They All Could Be California… Scones

The egg-free scone recipe we posted three years ago, Kevin’s Famous Scones, is one of the most popular posts on Prudent Baby. I make these scones all the time because they’re quick, simple, and so moist and delicious. We’ve made a million different flavors and we shake up the shapes (like these cranberry and tangerine hearts) every now and then. Last weekend I was whipping up a raspberry batch and flipping through my cookie cutters when it hit me to make state scones. In retrospect I should have flavored them Cal-style, but an avocado-and-oragnic-sprout scone doesn’t sound that great. Or does it?

We have a giant California school map in our hallway, and Scarlet loves to point out the different cities where her family lives, so these little flags were a fun way to practice edible geography. Whether you desire to eat your state of residence or not, I recommend adding this recipe to your repertoire: Kevin’s Famous Scones.
