Our Egg Hatching Adventure

Just Hatched Chick
That’s our first baby chick a few moments after hatching! Last year we started our backyard chicken keeping adventure with some pullets. This year we decided to try hatching our own eggs to add some chicks to our flock.

First we received our eggs and incubated them…

Then we went on “lock down” and prepared a home for the baby chicks…

And then… HATCH DAY!

And now… baby chicks! SQUEEEEEEE!

We love you Pippi!

Frozen Birthday Party Ideas & Inspiration

Frozen Birthday Cake
Last April Scarlet and her best friend Niko turned 6, and OF COURSE they wanted a “Frozen” themed birthday party. They have been having their birthday parties together since they were born (they still talk about their 3rd birthday “Dora” themed fiesta).

At the time, all things Frozen were sold out in every store everywhere, so we just went with the flow. This party isn’t necessarily full of Pinterest-worthy photography, but it was full of cheerful children and we had a magical time.

Flower Friday: Fern and Flower Swizzle Sticks

Flower Friday: Fern and Flower Swizzle Sticks
On Monday Jaime and Carleton celebrated their eight year anniversary (congrats!!) with a most delicious cocktail called a Swizzle. It’s pretty much a delicious rainbow in a glass. Each layer of the rainbow is a different type of alcohol, and you mix it all together with a swizzle stick (aka drink stirrers). We were hooked and had to make some swizzle sticks of our own.

I’ve been kind of obsessing over decorating with ferns lately, so I put together the Fern and Flower Swizzle Sticks. I thought the colors were perfect for fall.

5 and Fabulous: DIY Quinn through the Years

quinnI’m feeling a bit nostalgic, as mothers of curly haired 5 year olds have been known to be.

Miss Quinn is officially a big-time Kindergartener and yet when we started this blog, the blog formerly known as Prudent Baby, she was merely a 4 month old bundle of photogenic joy. How convenient to have a chubby little baby model for all my DIY displaying (and cuddling, of course) needs! Let’s just say that the life of Quinn has been heavily documented surrounded by handmade goodness. In celebration of our big girl’s Kinder debut, I’d like the present Miss Quinn through the DIY ages, in some of my favorite projects… sniff…

The Easiest & Cutest Pillowcase Ever: Tutorial

IMG_2824
The other day, I was explaining to a non-DIY-type friend that craft stores have their Christmas supplies up so early so that makers can have all their goods ready to sell/gift/hoard in time for the season. So in honor of the early starters here’s a little Christmas in September. I’m going to share my favorite quick pillowcase tutorial. A pillowcase makes a great gift by itself, and like we did here, as wrapping for a coordinating gift like our PJ pants!
easy pillowcase tutorialI learned this pillowcase technique a few years ago at QuiltCon when American Patchwork and Quilting was doing their 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge. UPDATE:  I just went to the site and it’s still going, so go check it out and make a few extra to donate! Bust that stash for a good cause!IMG_2711

Flower Friday: DIY Dried Flower Soaps

DIY Dried Flower Soaps (4 of 5)
Remember those beautiful flowers from when I was Yarn Bombing Blooms? Well, those (along with a few others) have dried up, and since I can’t seem to part with them I turned them into dried flower soaps. This project was ridiculously easy and so much fun. Guess what you’re getting for every birthday and holiday, Jaime and Jacinda?

Prudent Advice for Every Woman

Prudent Advice for Every Woman by Jaime Morrison Curtis

It’s here! My new baby! That’s right, Prudent Advice has been updated and is being re-released in an all new package, as Prudent Advice for Every Woman.

After my first book, Prudent Advice: Lessons for My Baby Daughter (A Life List for Every Woman) was released in 2010 (I still remember the day it was featured in The Wall Street Journal like it was my 21st birthday)…

…so many women said “This book is not just for mothers and daughters! It’s for all women, especially pre-teen and teenage girls.” At the time, I didn’t know many girls, just babies. Those babies have grown up so much, and I wanted to dedicate this book to these future women whom I admire and adore already.
Prudent Advice for Every Woman by Jaime Morrison Curtis

Then two years later, after the journal version, My Prudent Advice: Lessons for My Daughter (in which you record your own prudent advice for your daughter) came out and promptly went through multiple printings (find your copies in major bookstores, on Amazon, and at Paper Source stores nationwide);

readers said the same thing – you wanted a book you could share with all the women in your life, whether or not they had already chosen, or would ever choose, motherhood. So we went back to the drawing board, and I updated my book, and now here it is, in a perfect little package to gift to a girl or woman you love. It’s a vegan-leather bound little treasure, in orange and silver with a ribbon to mark your favorite piece of advice. Here’s mine (#17):
Prudent Advice: Be Generous

I have to say, six years after first writing it (when Scarlet was just a baby), I think maybe the message has gotten through to both of us. I couldn’t have dreamed of a more generous child. I don’t know if she will read through this book and find it to be a major influence in her life or not; but I know the act of writing it was a major influence on how I parent her. I talk about this is the new introduction to Prudent Advice for Every Woman. I am still crossing my fingers it means something to her in the long run. And that it means something to you all as well.
Prudent Advice for Every Woman

Anyway, I hope you love it. It’s been my honor to collect, read, and share your Prudent Advice over the years, and I hope to do it in many more versions to come. Please pre-order your copy now on Amazon, and look for it in stores this October.
Prudent Advice for Every Woman by Jaime Morrison Curtis

P.S. This one is for the sisters. Jacinda, I love you.
