Sweet Simple Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake Recipe
For a last-minute Valentine treat you can whip up today, this project from our book, Pretty Prudent Home: Your Ultimate Guide to Creating a Beautiful Family Home, is perfect. It looks like a basket of berries fresh from the farm. This recipe is a simple assembly project: Layer three delicious ingredients for a major hit of charm. Pick up a strawberry basket from your local craft store, then layer lady fingers, strawberries, and whipped cream. For the top layer of strawberries, slice the tops off and place the strawberries cut-side down on top of the whipped cream. For added fun watch our video on making flavored whipped creams.

DIY Powerpuff Girls Sleep Masks

This post is in partnership with Hulu.
Powerpuff Girls DIY Sleep Mask
Scarlet LOVES The Powerpuff Girls, so when we found out Hulu is now the only place to find the full classic animated series, we got excited. The Powerpuff Girls were the first cartoon I can remember where the girls were the heroines – bubbly and cute, but also total badasses. I love Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles.

So, The Powerpuff Girls have to save the world and still get home by bedtime. That’s a tall order, but I like all things that encourage going to bed at bedtime. We thought we would make some cute little no-sew sleep masks that your little girls and boys can wear when it’s time to tuck in for the night. These are easy-peasy to make together; get the full tutorial after the jump… (more…)

Roasted Potato Hearts with Garlic Dipping Sauce

Roasted Potatoes with Creamy Garlic Sauce Bring a little extra love to Valentine’s Day dinner with Roasted Potato Hearts. Roast up your potatoes and sweet potatoes in lovely little heart shapes, then serve with my favorite garlicky dipping sauce (that I put on everything – especially good with roasted veggies or salmon cakes).

These were so fun to make, and even more fun to eat. Get the recipe for Roasted Potato Hearts with Garlic Dipping Sauce. (more…)

Doing What You Love: My 365 Painting Project

IMG_2268

I’m not a resolution kind of person and I have figured out why. While I like to think about all of my flaws and envision a more perfect Jacinda, I am not naturally disposed to do stuff that I don’t want to do. Are there people who are? I think maybe. Well, all this is to say that I have found the secret to resolution success for myself. I have to pick something that I love to do! Something that makes me so happy that I stay up late at night doing it and then wake up two hours earlier than I need to the next day to get back at it. Guys, I’m painting again! I am painting every day and I am so happy.

Here is a selection of the quick daily paintings that I have done since January 1st. You can find them all on my Instagram page, @prudentjacinda. I’m especially proud of my newest work, a bison study and cacti-surrounded Armadillo. Come follow along, I’d love to hear what you think.

Should I do more floral paintings?

More portraits of my sister’s cat in human clothing? Weird.

More thinks that I love like plants and lobster? and cake?IMG_2247 (1)

More pretty pools that I find on Jaime’s instagram and random cow skulls covered in flowers? The great thing about painting every day is that I will have time for all of it. I can’t wait to see where this re-discovered passion will take me.

Is your New Year Resolution making you happy? If not maybe you should pick a new one. It’s still January after all.
