The commenters on The Mom’s View were not fans of my giant bow. In retrospect, perhaps I look silly. But at least I tried?

How to Host a Spooky Halloween

Every year we set up our haunted Halloween graveyard at the beginning of October (Scarlet added the bloody heart covered in glow-in-the-dark roaches this year, nice touch lady!). Those tombstones look old, and they are! Want to hear the story? It’s not scary at all, I promise…

I have four siblings, two of whom are much younger than I. When I was a teenager, before they were born, I’d visit my dad’s house around Halloween, and a house down the street always had the coolest old west graveyard decorations taking over their lawn.

Around the time that I went off to college, it seems the kids from that home also left the nest. When my brother and sister were toddlers, the owners of that home passed along the decorations to my father & stepmother so they could keep up the tradition on the street for their kids.

Now my siblings are in college themselves, so the decorations were passed on to me to share with Scarlet. We have also added a few of our own (say hello to zombie cat, plague mice, and terrifying tree bat).

This is the first year Scarlet was REALLY REALLY excited to decorate for Halloween. She’s her mother’s child, totally excited for the holiday, so I told her we could host a party for all her new Kindergarten friends the week before Halloween. Here’s all the stuff we got for our party!

And you can win the whole set to throw a party of your own! Find out how and see more pics of our spooky Halloween decor after the jump… (more…)

Pretty Prudent Trend: By the Bay

I’ve been itching to share our newest Pretty Prudent Trend with you this month – By the Bay. Let’s dive right in. Along with the previous post – Pretty Prudent Trend: The Redwoods – this By the Bay trend was inspired by my summer trip from LA to WA. I stayed on an island near Puget Sound and spent most mornings and evenings walking along the water. The rich colors and detailed textures make the bay a perfect place for decor and fashion inspiration.

Start small by working a couple new pieces in here and there. Create a Pinterest board to help you visualize colors and styles. I share a photo after the jump that has inspired me to completely change my closet (hopefully my wallet is on the same page too).

You can check out more posts inspired by this trip here: Composting 101, How to Clean Seashells, and a tasty Kale, Peach, and Roasted Almond Salad.

DIY Bicycle Basket Bag

Today we have Janneke from Jip by Jan showing us how to make the cutest bicycle basket bag. This lovely little accessory can add a pop of color to your bike, and is also extremely easy to clean (just in case the wine spills on your bike ride). Do you ride a bike pretty often? If not, after this tutorial you might just want to. I’d love to make one out of red and white gingham that could also double as a picnic bag.

You can learn more about Janneke here and make sure to take a peek at her quick and easy half-a-day tutorials.

Beyond the Poster: 3 Creative Framing Ideas

How to frame a book into book tray

In general, I am reluctant to turn to custom framing. Even with Michaels amazing weekly deals, it’s an investment I reserve for valuable items or crazy DIY schemes I get in my head but can’t execute with my arsenal of home-studio tools.

Earlier this week I loaded up the back of the van with three of the latter for the custom framing department at my local Michaels. When they had invited me, they mentioned that they frame everything from guitars, license plates and sports jerseys to quilts and wedding mementos so I brought along a few dream projects plus some backup artwork just in case my first choices weren’t do-able. Check out my Texas Tuesday video this week to see how it all shook out. Let’s just say that Derek from Michaels blew my DIY mind with his great ideas. Does it sound like we are old pals? We totally bonded over an awesome crafty brainstorming session. It wasn’t just me, while I was there three other customers (who Derek knew by name) came in with crazy projects. A football jersey that needed to show both sides (hmmnnmn), a 3-D collection of golf paraphernalia, and a woman who had so many questions about framing a cross-stitch that it sounded like a sitcom. I hear ya girl, cross-stitch takes a LONG time, have to protect your masterpiece. Eavesdropping on their conversations was a great way to learn about all the services that Michaels Custom Framing dept can provide from custom cut mirrors (DIY wheels turning) to engraving and LED gallery lights. Plus you can see exactly what your finished project will look like with the Michaels in-store custom frame Visualizer. High Tech.

Read on to see my finished projects!

Composting 101

Composting can sometimes come off as, let me put it this way: Confusing, Overwhelming Mind-boggling, Problematic, Odors, Stressful, and down right Tough. Good news, it’s not that terrifying! Whether you live in a tiny little apartment or big ranch, you can make composting a part of your daily routine. Let’s cover the basics:

Why should you compost?
1) About 30% of garbage that goes to landfills is made up of waste from your food and yards.
2) Composting is an organic way for you to supply your plants with nutrients so they can grow nice and healthy.
3) The microscopic organisms in compost help aerate your soil and help fight off plant diseases.
3) Because it’s totally free!

Keep reading to hear more about how to start composting after the jump…
