DIY: Easiest. Pillow. Ever. Part 2

Jacinda’s placemat pillow was a complete revelation right?!  After I read it I realized I had something in the same vein (meaning a two-sided fabric item I never use).  What was this item you ask?

…wait for it…

…a RUG!

I love this crewel design I got on clearance at Anthropologie forever ago, but it made a rather terrible rug, being all crooked and delicate.  When I saw Jacinda’s DIY I realized what its true destiny was meant to be:  a pillow for my hammock!  The DIY is the same as the placemat pillow (get it here) but I took pics after the jump…

Sanity Tip: One Clean surface

It’s been a rough week. Bronchitis, Ear infection, Man cold… it’s ugly around here. Here is one of my little tips for maintaining sanity… clean one surface. I always go for the kitchen island. It is the center of our house and a magnet for clutter. Cleaning a desk top can have the same satisfying effect. Oh, and drink a glass of wine. That can also have a satisfying effect.

To celebrate my clean surface, I filled two giant canisters with the “evil whites,” sugar and flour, and channeled Ina (see photo 7.) Just don’t look just out of frame there to the left, there’s a sink full of dirty pans.

Oh, I also put all of our meds into a casserole dish, that helped with the sanity a little too.

What’s your quick tip for maintaining sanity?

Prudent Project Round Up

Mara at Kleio’s Belly made this fantastic and hilarious version of the embroidered clock for her brother!  I love that she found a way to make a manly craft, I always want to make something for my husband and wish I had thought of this in time for the holidays!

Jen at It’s Me Jen made the felt flowers from the Sweet & Easy Baby Hair Clips and used them as appliques on this adorable outfit:

Mayya from Sew Chic & Unique was inspired by the spray painting in One Frame Three Ways to re-do her curtain rods, and they look great:

Ali made a Simple Snuggly Baby Blanket AND she made this cute owl softie to match!  So cute!

Handmade King Size Headboard

One of my new year’s resolutions is to get our bedroom decorated.  I will take you all on the journey with me, revealing the change bit by bit.  We just bought a new king size bed so step one is a new headboard.  I was inspired by Grace of Design Sponge and her gorgeous DIY otomi headboard so I made one of my own!  Her video tutorial is here, and mine is after the jump.  The only difference is that my headboard is King size and I had to make it with pieces of wood that would fit in my car.  And I have a small car.  Get the full how-to after the jump!
Update:  Check out pictures of the headboard hanging in our bedroom here.

DIY: Easiest. Pillow. Ever.

Pause for a moment because your life will never be the same. Ready?

A throw pillow made from a fabric placemat.

You know the kind I’m talking about… the placemat that you wash once and it never looks the same because, well, it needs to be ironed and sometimes that doesn’t even work? Can you tell that I’m bitter? I’ve been burned by fabric placemats before. But now, NOW, I love fabric placemats… at least, I love pillows formerly known as fabric pacemats.

You can thank my crafty sister-in-law for this genius idea, she rocked my world when she gave me one for Christmas. Even the gals at Crate and Barrel stared in wide-eyed-wonder when I explained what I had in store for this beauty.
Check it out after the jump…

New Years Fancy Feather Hair Clips!

Scarlet, myself, and Grandma (who had kindly volunteered to babysit tonight) have all come down with a cold, so we’re staying in. I thought I’d spice up our cozy new years with some fanciful dress-up.  Scarlet loves anything that matches mommy (see the mom and daughter aprons) so I made us up some easy peasy bright and fancy feather hair clips.
Totally fun, you just need some fabric, feathers and hot glue.  And personally I would totally wear this on a regular day to like the dry cleaner and grocery store as part of my hot mess mommy get up, why not.
