Come Away With Us: A Jordan Itinerary with Kids

Carleton, Scarlet, and I recently spent ten maginificent days touring the country of Jordan. From wandering the green north of Jerash, to luxuriating at the Dead Sea, to unplugging in Wadi Rum, to exploring the wonders of Petra, to relaxing at the balmy red sea of Aqaba – we had the experience of a lifetime. I’d like to share some highlights of our trip with you, and suggest the perfect Jordan itinerary for families with kids… (more…)
Summertime Jumper
When I was 4-years-old I had a red plaid jumper that I wore almost every single day. In fact, about 90% of the pictures taken that year have me sporting that bright tartan red with either polka-dot leggings or neon bike shorts underneath, so cool. Which brings me to the Summertime Jumper made by Anshu from Blooms and Bugs. When we first saw her cutest aladdin pants ever we knew we wanted to see more. The Strawberry Vanilla Dress was also perfect for sunny days and the Reversible Zen Dress, who doesn’t love a 2-in-1? However, when we saw the Summertime Jumper we knew it was it, classic, cute, versatile and totally customizable.

Leather, Rabies and Gelato: It’s Friday I’m in Love

Project we wish we had posted: Edible Teacups
Our pin you loved the most: 4th of July Strawberries
Both so simple and inventive, guaranteed show stoppers for Summer entertaining.
Funny thing my kid said: Quinn: “Cinderelly dressed in yelly, come sit next to me ya fine felly” Parent. Of. The. Year.
Favorite comment on prudent baby: This is truly beautiful! and great job on the gardening!
I’m at the year-1 stage of backyard gardening in our new home. Some plants start to get killed by the southern heat, so I put on shade and they slowly recover from the heat damage. Learning process…..
Thanks for sharing your garden pictures, I hope mine gets better and better in the years to come~
It’s great to know I’m not alone on the Summer heat gardening woes. Oh Texas. Thanks for the tips Lucy!

I am off to Kansas City for Quilt Market this Sunday. I wont have time for much except lunch and dinner near the convention center. Anything I MUST EAT or DRINK in Kansas City?
Blue Ombre Petal Cake
Isn’t this one of the most stunning cakes you have ever seen? Leslie from The Hungry Housewife is the brains behind this beautiful and delicious masterpiece and today she is going to show you how to make your own. When I spotted this bit of sweet ombre magic on The Hungry Housewife I had to delve into all her many other delicious treats. Oh how I’d love to start my day with her Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal and Crescent Cinnamon Rolls and top it off with a piping cup of Nutella Hot Chocolate (before the unbearable summer heat kicks in).

Backyard Farm Year 3!

I can barely believe it is year three of Prudent Baby’s Backyard Farm experiment. It has become such a part of our lives to tend to our garden that I can hardly remember a time when we didn’t have one. We look forward to spring like people must when they live somewhere with snow (growing up LA, I never had that “when will this winter end?” feeling I’ve heard about- but now I count the days till I get to till and plant). When we started three years ago, I had never grown anything in my life (actually I was famous for killing green things at an impressively rapid pace). Look how far we’ve grown since year one and year two! (omg, i couldn’t help myself with that pun). So…
Three years later guests who see our garden seem to think I have a natural green thumb, assuming I have some mystical talent (plant whisperer?) and/or a wealth of knowledge gained over a lifetime of growing plants. Not the case. THey think this because they assume growing food is hard. It’s not. My point in telling you this is to make you understand that anyone can grow food. It’s not that complicated. I tried it for fun three years ago, and it was not hard. Some things failed, some things died, but for the most part plants know what to do, so with water, sun, and a positive attitude (no giving up at your first fungus or squirrel), you can give it a shot. Once you start, you start learning, wanting to learn more, and truly enjoying what gardening is all about – not the results (pretty flowers or food are nice, but you can get them anywhere), but the peace.

Spending time outdoors in the sun with my plants is my meditation time, my me time, our family time. Scarlet and I have had such joy in our yard together, such pride, we make such a mess, we have such fun.

Come check out what we’ve got going on this year, and also I have a few questions for you, if you don’t mind teaching me a thing or two… (more…)

Fruit Balloons, Muppets, & Coral-Colored Bundles: It’s Friday I’m in Love
Project we wish we had posted:
DIY Fruit Balloons from Jordan at Oh Happy Day. So adorbs my eyes ache from the cuteness. And also, a fruit party sounds so juicy.
Random blog we are crushing on:
Since I met authors Audrey and Dan in Mexico earlier this year, I have been slowly working my way through the entire archives of their site, Uncornered Market. Seeing as it contains photographic and editorial record of their six-years of non-stop traveling around the world, this is going to take me awhile. Have you ever noticed someone with a special glow? Like you meet them in person and there’s something about them that says “I am kind, come be near me” and you find yourself feeling a little more peaceful in their presence? If you have any idea what I’m talking about, you will understand what I mean when I say that Audrey has that thing. Meeting she and her husband was truly inspiring to me, and following along on their adventures is great fun! Also, following them in real time on twitter @umarket is pretty addictive.
Album I am playing on repeat:
Youth Lagoon, The Year of Hibernation. That song in the Jordan video that I got so many emails about is on this album, it’s called “Afternoon.”
Funny thing my kid said:
Scarlet woke me up this morning by holding my hand and using it to hit me in the face repeatedly while squawking “Mommy, wake up, quit hitting yourself, Quit Hitting Yourself, QUIT HITTING YOURSELF!!!”
Favorite reader comment:
This week reader Erin left a comment on our Layer Cake Skirt tutorial post with a link to the picture above. “Thanks for the great tutorial – I made this as my first project on my new sewing machine and am thrilled!” First project? Whoa! Awesome work Erin!
Pinterest pin you loved the most:
Lime Sorbet Margaritas. Oh yeah, I feel ya’.
Thing I acquired and utterly adore:
Seeing as I had to buy a new laptop because I fell down (yeah, i was just like, walking… and then I fell down) and crushed my other laptop, camera, and iphone all in one fell swoop, I decided that I would treat my new laptop to a fancy cover. Totally digging my InCase Arkitip Rostarr Case. And also luvin’ on my sunny day shades. And I will take this opportunity to encourage everyone to call your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance co and add what I call a “clumsiness” rider to your policy to cover electronic equipment even if you accidentally destroy it yourself. Kind of a lifesaver (and worth a little extra cheddar) if you are prone to falling & spilling & such, like myself.
Place I wish I were headed this weekend:
To Reykjavik, Iceland for the Reykjavik Arts Festival. It’s not till 5/18 but I wish I was going there right now, so I say it still counts. I have always wanted to see the northern lights and swim in a glacial spring, so @visiticeland is next on my list! (img src)
Movie of the week:
The Muppet Movie! OMG, how did I not know? This movie was so wonderful, my heart doubled in size. And Jason Segel is my new pretend boyfriend, FYI. I love me that muppet of a man.
