Racerback Dress

Little girl dresses have to be one of my many crafting weaknesses. Every time I see a cute new one I think to myself, I have to make that (pin!). Jaime’s how to turn a t-shirt into a sundress is one of my recent favorites and this Racerback dress is also on the top of my list. Adrianna and Susan from Crafterhours came up with this too-cute-for-words sporty dress pattern and so graciously took a moment away from their Skirt Week 2012 to share it with you.

What do you say? Let’s start sewing this summer racerback dress…

Unicorn Birthday Party

This past weekend was Clare’s 5th birthday party. Her love affair with pink continues but we have moved on from Princesses… to Unicorn Princesses. So if you have a unicorn princess under your roof, you might want to take some notes. This was an insanely fun party and for the first time, Clare helped me with a bunch of the planning. That was the best part! Happy birthday big girl! I can’t believe I’ve been a mama for 5 years!

How quirky and fun are these Unicorn Rubber Duckies?

Quick & Easy Homemade Cheez-It Recipe

I have this friend, she makes a perfect French 75 (or sometimes 77) as soon as I walk in her door, no matter what hour of the day it is (don’t judge me), and there’s always a pile of delicious, homemade, healthy food served up with it. Her name is Macki, she’s a seriously prudent mama, and she also blogs about food and recipes at Family Kitchen. Today she is going to show us how to make healthy, preservative-free cheez-its in a totally do-able amount of time. Take it away Macki…

I’m a sucker for a cheese cracker, and when I’m hit with a craving it’s got to happen now. Unfortunately, I don’t keep these crackers around the house due to my cracker monster husband and baby boy. Now I’m stuck with the need of going to the store, but I found a way around it. I can whip up a batch faster than grocery store run!

Get the quick & easy cheez-it recipe after the jump…

Baby Veggies, Hot Dates and Apron Strings: Friday I’m In Love

Random blog we are crushing on: Joy the Baker
Ok, she is a little more famous than random so let’s just say that I’ve fallen in love with her all over again. Her These Things I’ve Learned in Thirty Years post made me nod silently in agreement a dozen times. You know how we appreciate Life Lessons around here. And also cookies, you know how we appreciate cookies as well.

Project we (read: I) wish we (read: I) had posted: Jaime’s How To Turn Any T-shirt into a Sundress.
I mean, how simple and fun is this project? I could barely contain myself. I had to make one the very same day. A few of you have already made one too! Post your photos on Facebook or Pinterest (@prudentbaby) so that we may lavish you with compliments and appreciation.

Funny thing my kid said:
Jacinda to Clare: What are Daddy’s favorite things?
Clare: Popcorn, pretzels, newspapers, laying in bed and “working” on the computer
Jacinda: What are mommy’s favorite things?
Clare: Sewing clothes for us on the sewing machine and making us dinner

Favorite reader comment: We’ve been talking gardens a lot on facebook. In reference to Jaime’s proudly displayed baby artichoke…
Marissa said “it’s cute, even if it does remind me of Audrey from little shop of horrors.” HA!

New fabric on my wish list: The new Houndstooths (teeth?) from Bonnie & Camille Modern Vintage. I wouldn’t kick it out of the sewing room if you know what I’m saying. wink wink.

Pinterest pin you loved the most: This sweet Peacock Tutu tutorial and 30 Things to Do with Sidewalk Chalk were in a tight race.

Place I wish we were headed this weekend: I can’t imagine being anywhere but right here getting ready for a big 5th birthday party this Sunday. Unicorn theme, of course! But I DO wish that Jaime and Scarlet were coming here to celebrate!

Cause which has touched our hearts: Aprons for Haiti is the newest project from Craft Hope. You can read all about it here. Put your passion for sewing to work and you could be giving a woman with a hard life the most beautiful thing she owns. Our fat-quarter apron (with a pocket added) would be perfect! Deadline extended through June 30th.

This thing that I acquired and utterly adore: Dallas Theater Center tickets for next season from the huz! A man willing to commit to 8 plays (including musicals) a year is a rare treasure, I know this. If you need a scheduled date night to make one happen, this is a brilliant solution. Seem pricey? There are affordable options at most theaters and even pay-what-you-can nights.

Know a blog we would definitely fall in love with? A project you really want to guest post? A product you simply must tell us about? Send it over to submissions(at)prudentbaby(dot)com

How to Turn any T-Shirt into a Sundress

I cleaned out my closet this weekend, woo hoo! In the process I dug up a bunch of old tees, including an adorable t-shirt that hasn’t fit quite right since pregnancy. And so, a new sundress was born. And a new incessant request: “Mommy, I like your shirt. Please can you  make it into a dress for me please please please please pretty-please-with-sugar-and-a-cherry-on-top???”

Jacinda and I love recycling t-shirts. We’ve made t-shirts into French Poufs, Football JerserysTwo-Minute T Shirt Dresses, Five-Minute T Shirt Tunics, Toddler Harem Pants, Baby Bubble Sleeve Tees, Top Knot Baby Hats, and even Christmas Stockings.

But I think that this is my favorite old tee shirt project, because it’s SO easy, quick, and cute; the perfect little dress for summers in the yard. You don’t even have to hem it, hello, I love not-hemming.

Sewing 101: How to Gather Fabric

Kathy from MerrimentDesign is here with us today to share another of her awesome Sewing 101 Lessons (see What You Need in Your Beginner Sewing Kit and How to Sew French Seams). Take it away Kathy… I’d like to thank Jaime and Jacinda for letting me talk with you today about gathering. Gathering is one of those techniques that you’ll see in a ton of sewing projects like skirts, blouses, puffed sleeves, dresses, and pretty much anything you’ve ever seen with a ruffle. Gathering is just a way to bunch up fabric so that it’s a little more ruffle-y and full. Gathers can either be really tight and frilly like the ruffle I made for Elise’s baby sunhat: as well as Jaime’s magicalist magical tutu dress of magic: and Jamie’s delicious layer cake skirt: Or they can be more subtle and streamlined like the delicate gathers on my tiered baby dress pattern that features Jacinda’s lovely and striking Modern Texas fabric available at Spoonflower: You can use gathering on teeny projects like on Jacinda’s pin cushion ring …or along super wide edges like Elise’s gathered crib bedskirt And in practice, there are as many different gathering techniques as there are applications for it. Today I’m going to share how to gather fabric with your sewing machine… (more…)

Vintage Books, Pretty Necklaces, and Dumb Friends: It’s Friday I’m in Love

Favorite comment on Prudent Baby: Rebekah left a comment on our Beautiful Dress Up Wings tutorial, with a link to this picture of the set she made using our instructions. OMG, have you ever seen such a cutie? Everyone go give your child wings: How to Make Beautiful Dress Up Wings.

Awesomest day of the week: Wednesday! Why? Because it was Jacinda’s birthday. Jacinda, to make up for my dumbness in forgetting and texting you inane work questions instead of sending you champagne and babysitters, I give you this lobster cake (via Cake Opera Co.). If I had your skills I would make a cake lobster-thought-bubble that says “I’m sorry.”

Random blog we are crushing on: I came across this blog through my literary agent’s pinterest, and I just fell in love with it. Vintage Childrens’ Books My Kid Loves is exactly what it sounds like, a treasure trove of beautifully illustrated reading material that will take you and your kid back in time.

Our pin you loved the most: This week the honor goes to the Summertime Jumper Tute we posted on Monday.

Funny thing my kid said: She didn’t say anything funny, cause she’s all sick and snuggly right now. We are on appendicitis watch, send us good vibes.

New fabric on my wish list: I LOVE this Alexander Henry Folklorico – in both colorways. Go check it out, I think you’ll adore it. I did just get my latest fabricworm stash, with many yards of Dear Stella Maasai Mara in Nairobi Cream (not sold out yet! snag!).

Place I wish we were headed this weekend: To Chicago, to see my friend Sonya and go to her salon and have her work her magic on my hair. Dude, I love highlights but they are kind of a pain when your stylist lives 4,000 miles away. I’d stay at Longman and Eagle and I’d definitely eat twelve entire pizzas.

This thing I acquired and utterly adore: Oh, just THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NECKLACE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!

Pray tell mamas, what were the highlights of your week?

Full Circle

Ten years ago I was working as a marketing director for Disney and interviewing candidates for a job in our department. I walked out into the lobby and met a stunning brunette with pretty blue eyes and a voice that somehow told you that she was a real California girl, not a transplant like myself and many others who had made their way to Burbank to work in the entertainment industry. “Jaime? Hi, I’m Jacinda” And so it began, this co-workers at Disney – turned single girl friends – turned married girl friends – turned new mama friends – turned co-founders of Prudent Baby – turned co-workers at Disney – friendship. Yes, this month we are going back to our Disney roots as contributors to Disney Baby. What can you expect from Disney Baby? Well, it will be more of what you love here at Prudent Baby including crafty tutorials, parenting tips, family travel guidance, entertaining and decorating ideas and hot mess mommy style advice, but sometimes we might just get a little personal and talk about these lil babies of ours more than we do on Prudent Baby. We are excited to share with you (and each other) some of these little family moments that take our breath away.

Jaime and I won’t be alone in our Disney Baby adventure. There is a team of contributors from around the web that you probably already know and love, like… (more…)
