DIY: $3 Cake Stand

Lately I have found my fingers tapping for a new quick and easy project for the home. This project had to follow three criteria: it had to be cheap, had to be done during nap time, and had to be useful. This cake stand takes only a few minutes to make (not including drying time) and can be used for every occasion. You can put all your old scrap fabrics to use – a great idea for themed party decor…

Photographing Your Kid with Clickin Moms

One of my creative goals for this year is to massively improve my photog skills. I have a beautiful new camera and not much of an idea how to use it beyond auto. Lovely photographer Kristen Critz was kind enough to come by and give me a refresher course but I still have so many questions. And the mistakes, so many mistakes. So imagine my delight when Clickin Moms, an online community and wealth of information for anyone interested in photography from professionals to point-n-shooters, asked us to write a few posts about our photography.

I’ve been lurking around their forums and tutorials and blog, soaking in as much knowledge as I can and being inspired to set some specific photography goals for myself. One of my goals is to “get the shot” when it really matters. Since starting to shoot manually, I have been successful when I can take my time, check shots and experiment with a few different exposures. However, when it really matters, when I only have one chance to get the shot, I’m still falling short. A little blurry, a little dark, just not perfect and leaving me wishing I had left it on Auto.

So this weekend, inspired by a fantastic article, Ten Tips for Getting Portraits of your own Kids by Kristin Ingalls on Clickin Moms, I set out to get some practice in. One of Kristin’s tips for photographing your own kids is to use a special prop. Clare loves to look at my fabric stash so she was thrilled to be able to take some new threads outside and have some fun.

The Breakfast Project: Make Milk-mates!

We love milk here in the Curtis household – in fact, my husband’s family runs a dairy farm in Pennsylvania, so you could say milk runs in our blood. So when I was asked to be a part of The Breakfast Project, I jumped at the chance to show you how we freeze purees into fun shapes to make flavored milk that’s extra cute. I hope you like my little home movie!

Milk asked me how I do breakfast at home, and I thought y’all would enjoy this super-fun, totally simple trick that turns your glass of milk into something extra special. While we love all the flavored milks you can make with this method (strawberry, blueberry, chocolate), the favorite (as you’ll see in the video) around here is definitely peanut butter milk. What flavors would you try?

If you make some, be sure to send me a picture, it might even get featured on thebreakfastproject.com, where you can find my video and so much more fun stuff like recipes, coupons, and the hilarious new “midnight run” ad starring Salma Hayeck (umm, yes, she is just as beautiful in person)…

Baby Bell Bottoms

Adding a piece of fabric to a pair of jeans is a simple way to give them a whole new look. Even big brother’s rugged jeans can become stylish hand-me-downs for little sis. Cherie from You and Mie gave her daughter’s pants a little extra pizzazz by using fabric to turn them into bell bottoms. They are super easy to do and any pair of pre-loved jeans will work.

While you are browsing through You and Mie you must also check out her Custom Fabric Photo Book. It would make a great gift for a grandparent. The Boy-cycle Wear she made and put her daughter in has baby hipster written all over it. I want!

Giveaway Winner: Mommy and Baby Skin Care Collection by Nassim Naturals

If you are on a quest to find the perfect skin care product for you and your baby, Nassim Naturals may just be it for you.

Nassim Naturals was born from my passion for natural beauty and natural healing. As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by applying nature’s methods to healing the body – especially the skin. As my passion grew, more and more mothers started asking me to create lotions and balms for their families. My love and respect for mothers, and my desire for future generations to grow up around less chemicals, led to the creation of Nassim Naturals, where skin products are made from natural plants and high quality therapeutic grade essential oils – without additives, chemicals, or artificial scents.

DIY Polymer Garden Stones

Last week, when experimenting with Garden Stones for our Lorax Project, I played around with polymer clay and made some small garden stones. The girls loved painting them and surprising their dad with them as a sweet little gift for our herb garden. These would make a lovely Mother’s or Father’s Day gift for a gardening enthusiast. Ohh, I’m also thinking we could make Easter eggs to use year after year! These are really easy, let’s make some. (more…)
