This little boy turned four a few weeks ago and we celebrated with a Lego party. You might remember him from his Batman 3rd birthday party, or maybe his first (football) birthday party that we shared right here on Pretty Prudent, You might also remember when he was born and introduced right here or even when I announced that he was going to be a boy with some chocolate mustache pops before mustaches were even a thing (I’m a visionary like that.) But now he is a big four-year-old boy and as many have been known to do, he is obsessed with Legos and so a Lego-themed birthday party was in order. We didn’t go nutso but did just enough to make it special and super fun. If there is a Lego party in your future, here are some of our favorite party tricks. We started off by dumping all of our Duplos out on the living room and inviting guests to don a Construction Hat and get building as they arrived.
When everyone was finished, we handed out certificates of achievement for each of our Master Builders. (more…)
Tie-dye and summer go hand in hand, but in winter we are all about the Japanese art of Shibori dyeing. Have you tried it yet? Once I opened the package I was dyeing everything from scraps of fabric to dresses and pants. Today I’m going to show you how to incorporate Shibori into a sweet Valentine’s Day gift with these Shibori heart hand warmers.

This DIY Baby Bonnet with Leather Ties is an adorable beginner sewing project for baby.
You know when you just love a fabric so much you hold onto it forever and then end up not making anything with it? Ya, I don’t know what that’s like either.
In order to get the ball rolling and actually use this fabric, I started by making this cute baby bonnet with leather ties. I ditched the ruffles on this one because I wanted to give it a more modern look, and added leather ties. Notice a theme this past week (ahem, Leather Mason Jar Mug and Leather Heart Keychains)? I adore how it turned out and am now on the hunt for a sweet baby to give it to. Know of any?

I have been on quite a leather kick since I made the Leather Mason Jar Mug, and with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I put my leather scraps to use and made these leather heart keychains. So cute, right? As much as I love Valentine’s Day, I also adore the idea of Galentine’s Day (for the ladies!) so I made that extra special one for my best friend – Be My Galentine. Leslie Knope was right, it should be a National Holiday.

A few weeks ago, Greta invited us to her two year anniversary workshop for her flower store, Glasswing Floral. You may remember when we’ve worked with her in the past on such posts as, Rose and Eucalyptus Body Scrub, Lavender and Lemon Muffins and How to Make a Beautiful Mother’s Day Bouquet. When we arrived at the workshop, we were greeted with bouquets of beautiful blooms and encouraged to create our own original bouquet. She gave us a few pointers, a glass of champagne, and told us to just have fun. How do you think it turned out?
Today we are going to break down the basics of building your own bouquet with a few tips from Greta, and a few others we’ve learned along the way. Let’s get started!

Hello friends!!! You may have noticed some changes around here today. You are not losing your mind! It’s true, this is a whole new online Pretty Prudent world. We hope you like it, and that getting used to it doesn’t throw you off too much – it should be a LOT easier to navigate, especially if you read our site on mobile or tablet. Last night we launched our new responsive-design site – try it out on your phone, your tablet, and your desktop or laptop computer. It knows what technology you are using to read us on, and it makes the site efficient and easy for you to use, no matter what platform you choose!
Jacinda and I have been working on building this site for you for over a year. What a year… finishing our book, Pretty Prudent Home: Your Ultimate Guide to Creating a Beautiful Family Home (which features more than 50 all new projects you can’t find on our site, plus a useful and fun guide to planning how to decorate and entertain for your friends, family, and home), and spending countless hours fine-tuning this new website to be what (we hope) is the most efficient and effective platform for you to use our tutorials and make the best things you can possibly make! We have noticed a significant trend over the past five years: We see our readers (you guys) moving from using our site primarily on your computer (when we launched, 100% of you read our site on your PC), to accessing our tutorials most often on your phone or tablet (now, 60% of you use your phone or tablet while you follow our instruction). So, realizing your needs have changed, we wanted to make a site that was easier for you to use while you cook or craft (or lie in bed).
So if you are following steps while sitting at your sewing machine or adding ingredients while standing in your kitchen, you can see the information you need from us in a clearer, simpler, easier-to-use format: basically we envisioned a site where you don’t have to stretch two fingers diagonally just to read the steps, or open your laptop up to spills and drops just to make something from our 5-year deep archive (yes, we have over 3,000 tutorials here on Pretty Prudent). So, welcome to our new hub. We hope you guys like it!
Check out all of our tutorials in our pretty new archive pages, and follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and our personal fave, Instagram (on insta we tend to get personal so we made ourselves each a separate account – @prudentjaime and @prudentjacinda) and let us know what you think!
Let’s make stuff together, cook stuff together, take fantasy vacations together, and talk about our style and mostly our babies together. Much love from the whole Prudent Family!! We hope you like the new Pretty Prudent!!!
California has been a hot mess of weather this winter. One minute it’s cold and rainy and the next it’s back to summer heat, which means lots of dry and itchy skin. These lavender and oatmeal soaps made with shea butter are exactly the cure for that and smell wonderful. The oatmeal works as a moisturizing exfoliant and the lavender is calm and soothing. Make a batch to give to friends, or make a few in heart shapes for Valentine’s Day!

Whenever I go to the craft store I find myself spending a good few minutes in the aisle filled with bags of colorful stones. I had a fish once (until I accidentally cooked him in the sun. R.I.P. Melvin) and I had always planned to fill the bottom of his bowl with the prettiest stones (he didn’t make it that long). Since I clearly can’t even keep a fish alive, I decided to put the stones to a different use and turn them into this pretty trivet to go with my favorite Christmas present ever. What do you think? Pick out a bag of colorful pebbles and let’s get started.
